Seeing these vicious attacks on human rights locally, nationally and abroad does not sit well with my spirit. Our local state government refuse to provide adequate healthcare for 275,000 people who need it the most. They are forcing us to work in hazardous conditions with no HAZARD PAY and continue to limit how we organize and reach out to our members. All of this and refuse to acknowledge our Labor Agreement after their practices were ruled unconstitutional. Local and federal politicians continue to play cat and mouse while working people suffer. They quickly pass frivolous legislations while refusing to address the urgent needs of the people. Isn’t the primary function of government is to serve and protect the general welfare? Why must we be ok with our human rights to simply live are under attack? My union, CWA is far from perfect, but I am proud to say we don’t mind having challenging conversations and holding one another accountable. We have been combating internal and external racism head on! We do more than talk the talk. We have always been on the frontlines speaking out and mobilizing against police brutality, racism and any other form of hate. We are literally in a fight for our lives and existence as individuals and as a union. Corporations and legislators continue to strip us of all the human rights they possibly can while telling us to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps. The price of everything in the country in increasing except our MINIMUM WAGE! There are union members across the country literally living in homeless shelters because they can’t afford living expenses or are being evicted from their homes. Adequate medical coverage is still a luxury for the elite only. Bargaining rights and the right to organize a union are being treated like they are nonexistent. Voting rights are being thrown in the trash like yesterday’s garbage. Some leaders, not all, but many only have 1 agenda and that agenda does not include the future leaders of the labor movement let alone ANY the movement for Black lives. We must fight to control the narrative, tell your story! Organize with like minds, hopefully that’s in a union. Join a union in your workplace. Speak out against injustices, whatever you do, do something. Public Workers are Essential! Social Service workers have continued to work in high call volume and direct contact situations during this pandemic without fail.
