Okay but what I love about this is that Jenny Saville painted it AT 22 YEARS OLD for her Glasgow School of Art graduate show, and it then went on to be sold for £9.5 million ($12.4 million) at auction in 2018, becoming the most expensive work by a female living artist sold at auction. Her graduate show piece! Upon seeing it, art collector Charles Saatchi (of Saatchi Gallery) bought the painting and almost all of Saville’s student body of work, to be shown in a 1994 exhibition of young British artists.
Not to mention that it’s absolutely massive - a larger than life, exaggerated self portrait at 7ft tall and 6ft across with layers upon layers of oil paint
Propped depicts a woman gazing at her reflection in a clouded mirror. Gouged across the surface...is a quote from an essay by the French feminist Luce Irigaray, which interrogates the way in which men and women interact. In the painting, the quote is inverted and illegible – intended for the subject’s consumption, as opposed to the viewers’. Propped was first displayed at Saville’s degree show in Edinburgh in May 1992, with a mirror hung opposite it at a distance equal to the height of the painting; this allowed the viewer to turn away from the painting and implicate themselves in the artwork.
