Okay, I'm writing a story where one character has epilepsy and he has focal seizures. I have an idea of what his are like, but I really really really want to get things right, so I would love to hear what a focal seizure is like from your perspective. Is it sudden and all of a sudden you can't move/talk? How aware are you of everything during one? What's it like coming out of one? If you don't want to answer, I understand. Thank you!
Yes, that’s pretty much what a focal is like for me - I’m usually mostly aware. Sometimes I can move but not talk, and I’ve taught my husband some key ASL words plus our own special signals for when that happens. But when I can’t do either, it’s super frustrating. I basically have to ride it out. I try to focus my mind on something slightly challenging, like the Fibonacci sequence or all the presidents in reverse chronological order, and that seems to help me come out of them faster.
