“...And every student needs to participate in atleast one event. Considering we aren't having any other extra curricular activities in school for this month, your participation and effort in the contests will be graded in your report card. Participate in groups of two or three.”
The classroom was filled with groans and complaints. The teacher shook his head, mumbling something underneath his breath about how students nowadays are so inactive, and exiting the class.
“Park Jisung! We need to choose an event.” You turned around in your chair to face Jisung, who sits right next to you. He raised an eyebrow at you. “I never agreed to be in a team with you.”
You scoffed at his words. “You nonverbally agreed to be in every team with me the day we became friends. We, my friend” -You took a hold of his hand, tightly clasping it- “Are a package deal.” You nodded your head at no one in particular. Jisung knew he was stuck with you.
Both of you eyed the list of event as if it was the most dreaded thing on earth, which it kind of was, at that moment. “How about the dance camp?” Jisung said and you shook your head. “No way. I'd fail man. What about cooking?” You said, and Jisung stared at you with a disappointed expression. “You and I both know I'd burn the school down.” Both of you observed the list closely, before you finally spoke up. “Ooh I know! The pottery event!”
“I don't think either of us are qualified for this but sure, go for it.” Jisung said. “That's the whole point! Since neither of us know how to do it, we'll be able to put our full effort equally.”
Jisung didn't object further, pretending that what you said made sense, and both of you signed up as a team.
It was the first day of the event, and you and Jisung naturally sat next to each other in the pottery class. Not many students were their, three other groups beside yours, and none of them looked experienced.
Your first assignment was to make a simple cup. You observed the instructor well, and then it was your turn. “I don't think we're doing this right.” Jisung said, looking at the cup-like structure the both of you had created.
“shh- that's just what you think.” You said, putting a finger on his lips. “No, i'm pretty sure it's what i know.”
You looked lost after a second or two, and Jisung stepped in, leaning closer to you. “Look, I think it goes like this.” He said, putting his hands on yours, trapping you from behind between his body and the wheel.
Your breath hitched, as you froze on spot. The sensation of Jisung's big hands on yours felt strangely comforting, as he guided you, softly shaping the clay.
Jisung stopped his movements, flustered when he realised the position you two were in. Somehow, he didn't want to let go, he wanted to hold you tight, suddenly. He looked down to see you staring up at him. Both of you could feel your heartbeat increasing.
“I can hear your heartbeat- why is it going so fast all of a sudden?” Jisung spoke softly, his voice an octave deeper than it usually is.
You cleared your throat and shook your head, focusing on the structure you were creating. On finishing it, you beamed proudly. “It's a masterpiece!” You said, and Jisung stared at you like crazy. “Just like you.” He mumbled underneath his breath, covering his mouth immediately. You stared at him as he shook it off.
At the end you had a nice cup, and even the instructor praised the both of you. You looked at each other and smiled, cheeks still red from what had happened earlier. Exiting the class, you suddenly felt shy next to Jisung.
“Well, I guess we should head home.” You said, avoiding eye contact. “I can walk you home.” Jisung quickly said, not wanting to see you go just yet.
You agreed to that and walked ahead, but Jisung stopped you. “Wait! I... I kind of wanna... Hold your hand again.” He whispered quietly, flustered once again. To that you smiled, taking a hold of his hand yourself as the both of you walked. It felt nice, his hand in yours, warm and comfortable. He dropped you home, and both of you bid each other a shy goodbye.
Going home, Jisung opened a text from you, smiling and squealing excitedly on reading it. “Let's go to a movie tomorrow, I'll let you hold my hand more often. It's a date :)”
And it felt like the start of something new.
