Press play on the video above to check out my Grade 5 home room at my current placement school. 😀📚✏️ Today is my second last day - I must say that I will be incredibly sad to leave. I have created such a great rapport with all teachers, staff and students. They have been so supportive, welcoming and resourceful and it has been such a valuable and enjoyable experience. During my placement I have had the chance to plan and facilitate lessons for maths, inquiry and literacy as well as helping out with Book Club, Music, Dance and Sport. The grade 5's are currently learning about figurative language and how to use it in their own writing to express their voice as an author and to catch the readers attention and imagination. I have recently introduced metaphors, similes and idioms to them all and working in small groups trying to identify these forms of figurative language and get students to brainstorm some of their own ideas. This experience has been challenging as some forms of figurative language are harder to identify than others and some which students feel could be more than one type at once. To help students to consolidate their learning I sourced some YouTube clips which showed examples of Popular music and movies which the students would be familiar with. These clips made explicit links to what the form of language was and why. Once showing these videos the students and I had a discussion about figurative language - resulting in a lot of them gaining a deeper understanding of the terms and using them successfully themselves!!! Witnessing a child light up when they gain a better understanding of a topic or a subject and start to apply their learning In new ways and knowing that you had a part in that is so rewarding!!!
