Dr. Frankenstein's crime was not that he invented a creature through some combination of hubris and high technology, but rather that he abandoned the creature to itself.
“Bruno Latour: Love Your Monsters”
This goes on to argue that rather than try to avoid all our inventions and technologies in an effort to make invisible our errors, we should embrace them and work patiently to improve them and make them work in less damaging ways. We can’t just give into our Icarus moment (reaching too high and finding horror in what we’ve made and done) and retreat from progress - even protecting nature requires all our skills and attentions.
An interesting read. Not sure how I feel about all of it, though. But hey, monster stories being applied to modern problems!
