#promenade deck

Today I’ll be posting photos depicturing the decks and promenades of various ocean liners. These spaces were essential to the life on board and passengers used to spend a big part of their journey on these spaces. As it was the case with almost all public spaces on a ship, the outdoor spaces were strictly divided by clases. First class promenades tended to be spacious and offered an unrestricted view on the ocean. Second class passengers also had a good view, but usually they had much less space. Finally, third class tended to have little space and their outdoor spaces were usually located in the lower parts of the ship were the view wasn’t as good. Big parts of “their” deck had to be shared with technical facilities, like lifeboats, pipes or winches. However, in the end, the distribution of the decks was different on each ships. Curiously, on a not small number of ocean liners second class passengers complained that their promenades were even worser than the ones of third class.
