Aims

My aims are to create 2 portraits, one in studio and one on location, photos that draw on elements developed by the Dutch Masters of the Baroque Period, such as lighting, mood, colour tones and props. But adding a modern contemporary fashion aspect to them and injecting them with elements of my own personality.

 Objectives

·        Figure out how to accurately recreate the desired lighting techniques for the location shoot.

·        Study in close detail the works of the Dutch Masters so that their influence can be clearly seen in the work I shall produce

·        Source or create props and outfits

·        Blend elements of period fashion with modern contemporary fashion

·        Find a model to pose in the location shoot

·        Come away with 2 fine portraits  

·        Have a clearer understanding and ability of working with natural and studio light

 Investigation

When given the task to research the Dutch Masters I came across 2 portraits that caught my eye. ‘Portrait of a Man Holding a Skull’ 1615 by Frans Hals and ‘The Girl in a Picture Frame’ 1641 by Rembrandt. 

The portrait by Hals grabbed my attention from the moment I saw the skull featured for its Memento Mori quality and dark aesthetic which is just my cup of tea! Upon closer inspection, lighting and shading wise it should be perfectly do able to recreate this either on location or in studio.

The Rembrandt portrait I loved as it presents more of a challenge. The portraits features a women wearing a dark red dress and a bonnet standing within a feigned picture frame, with her hands resting on the bottom of the frame, thus presenting a more 3-D illusion, the light touching her hands and face, but not the rest of her body, making her look as though she is coming out of the painting and into the real world.

 Materials and Techniques

I already own a realistic resin mold 1:1 scale size human skull (I call it Gerald) that will be perfect for the Frans Hals inspired shoot. For clothing I plan on using a modern black velvet blazer, a fedora hat but with the addition of a neck ruff to incorporate some of the period fashion.

 For the Rembrandt, sourcing a good dark red dress that matches, or feels like a modern take may be tricky but still achievable.  A frame could be sourced buy purchasing a large picture or mirror frame from a charity shop and repurposing it for the shoot.
