Mirchi Komachi is an online clothing brand that’s based in Mumbai. Upping the bar in Indian street style, they encourage Indian women to enjoy Indian-traditional fabrics and handicrafts every day, in non-traditional outfits. Yoshiko, the founder, and I met around two years ago, and among other things, we talked about anime, how Mumbai monsoon isn’t fun, and cats. Since then, we’ve had many more chats on these (among others) topics, and we shot for her brand Mirchi Komachi towards the end of the then under-appreciated year 2019. She’s passionate, ethical, funny and a cat-lover, so it was natural that we got along. What also helped was our matching sensibilities on the ideas of freedom, representation, capitalism, equality etc. I was so glad that she chose a #nomakeup approach for the shoot. Our small team of 3 (Yoshiko @mirchi.komachi + Desi Kiki with a force of nature @fruitca.ke aka TJ + Me), went around town making photos. :) Our shoot plans were delayed many times on account of life but we did manage to shoot what we wanted to after 6-7 months of back and forth. We took our inspiration from the 1989 Studio Ghibli film Kiki’s Delivery Service, the story of a 13-year-old Kiki moving to a seaside town with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone, in accordance with her village's tradition for witches in training. The movie among others is about youth, burnout, self-reliance — things, all of us have had to deal with at some point of time or another. “Three decades after first releasing into theatres, Kiki’s high-flying journey is a poignant reminder that we can only work as hard as we allow ourselves to rest and enjoy our lives. Many of these aspiring engineers choose the subject for the prospect of securing employment at the end of the course. A great number end up on the course due to the absence of a better option – does our society fail these young people by not providing them with enough resources, options or courage to make more educated decisions about study and career options? The promise of engineering is that of a happy-ever-after, of a secure future in a socially valued and well-paid job. But many fail to make the grade, and the myth of the promise has resulted in a class of unhappy engineers. The charm of income and status lasts for some time but sooner or later, the factors determining true satisfaction such as interesting work, personal growth, and recognition takes over. Characterised as the quarter-life crisis, the phenomenon that many millennials are facing, they find themselves stuck in a proverbial rut, trapped and feel a sense of powerlessness while constantly expected to lead a fulfilling life.
