Folio 2 Evaluation
Much like last block, folio 2 brought about much apprehension and challenges, and although the quantity in projects dropped, the content of them only increased.
Despite already knowing some of what to expect in this unit, the amount of fashion briefs awaiting me caused me to feel overwhelmed, meaning I was unable to complete them as soon as i’d have wanted due to being unsure of myself. These were the briefs that really pushed me to my absolute limits, seeing as this is something I would’ve previously considered as my weakest area. In retrospect I had a lot more fun carrying out these briefs than I ever thought possible, and learning that adding your own flavour, incorporating your own personal tastes to the shoot, making it into something you'd like to see, or with the clothes you could see yourself wearing, at a location that speaks to you, was what made it feel less like work.
The ‘something old’ and ‘something new’ briefs made me think about set construction more than anything, and showed me what kind of lighting I could create when the most unlikely objects can be invited in as props or to aid/makeshift light. It also encouraged me to problem solve, i.e. using diffuser sheets to tone down hard highlights, black card to give a harder edge line to the subject, or even just small, compact mirrors, to add detail, preventing the main focal points of your subject from looking flat on camera.
The documentary unit had to be one of my favourites. The thing I enjoyed most about it is that it allows you to be a bit more radical, making images that are often slightly imperfect with a roughness to them. It was also the first time I got to properly give colour grading a try, and this way of post-producing made the world of difference to the visual impact my images had.
Project Brand Research
Some of the inspiration behind my project brand location shoot. We see the same pair of tan suede shoes on two completely different models, but with the same background - the concrete pavements and red bricks. This reinforces that suburban, working-class housing estate feel, the very one I wanted to communicate in my brand shoot.

Project Brand Finals
Chosen brand is Fred Perry, as shown by the green crest on the plimsol shoes. I have always really liked the look and style in their clothing, and it’s very classic and timeless. Personally, I prefer a more classic look than a street/sporty look. Although Fred Perry used to carry some element of history with tennis as a sport, they eventually moved away from that association. I also feel that since my model is a fan of this brand it seemed fitting and honest to make this my choice.
On location I kept this fairly simple, against a brick wall, with little to distract the viewer. I found the richness of the reds/orange of the bricks complimentary against the really dark navy. I think this wall gives a real suburban, working class feel to the image.
In the studio, I again kept things minimal, having a snood light pointed straight from up above, shining down on to the shoes to bring out the textures and character of them, then there was a small snood backlight to avoid the background looking flat. I set this light to the very lowest power, REM. I found that even one full stop of power made the vignette a little too intense, but this setting was just obvious enough to add impact. The grey background is slick and also very soft - I used two different grey backgrounds during my shoot, but eventually I switched to the one as seen in this photo and it really made the difference.
Project brand studio final image.
I wanted this image to look smart, sleek and simple which is why I chose a Ted Baker. I decided to use the box it came in because it was bright and added a small pop of colour to the flat lay.
