My name is Liam Scott I am a 20-year-old student photographer who was born in South Africa and later moved to the UK at the age of 4. I started to get into photography during a trip to Romania in 2019, purchasing my first camera upon return to the UK. In 2020 I began studying photography at City of Glasgow College.
During this project I was inspired by the works of David Gilliver to create a series of images which tell the story of a tiny world. I decided to use Lego as my base for the tiny worlds I would create, as this helped to reflect on the tiny worlds most of us would create out of Lego as a child.
I was inspired to recreate an underground street racing seen from the games, and movies I had experienced as a young teen e.g. ‘Need for Speed’ and ‘Fast and Furious’. I decided the somewhat childish Lego with a far more adult story helped to give some comic relief whilst still connecting two important parts of my childhood. I felt this helped juxtapose the dark underground nature of street racing, and the often-dangerous culture that surrounds it with the light-hearted, fun for everyone experience Lego is generally associated with.
What was the project theme and what did you think of it?
The theme was Tiny Worlds, which focused on creating small sets/scenes and using them to tell a story over 6-12 images. I found this project really interesting, and it allowed me to have a much greater understanding of storytelling in photography.
What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting (making the photographs? Optimising images? printing?)
I found creating the sets to be the most interesting part, it’s something I don’t have much experience with, and it really allowed me to be more creative.
What new techniques have you experienced?
This project helped me understand how using a long focal length and then getting closer to the subject allowed me to have a sharper focus while at close range. Â
What technique would you like to develop further?
I would like to develop my skills with set building as I feel I have very little experience with this, and it might help me in the future.
Which photographers did you research throughout this project?
David Gilliver & Erin Sullivan
How have they influenced your photographs?
Seeing David Gilliver’s work help lead me in the direction of taking something and making it a bit more whimsical, leading me to use Lego in quite an adult scene.
Which technique did you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed using panning shots to give the Lego cars a sense of movement.
What do you feel is the most successful part of your project and why?
I feel the lighting was the most successful part of my project as this really helped to give the overall atmosphere and feeling I set out to achieve.
Did you encounter any problems in your project?
I found working with a small space to be a hindrance.
How did you learn from them and how did they affect your final images?
I decided to make my set modular as this would allow me to shoot in a relatively small space. This meant the final images had to be more controlled as far as the set goes.
What would you do differently given the chance to complete the project again?
If I had the chance to shoot this project again, I would like to experiment with using some practical affects when shooting, maybe adding in some smoke to add some more atmosphere to the images.
