I finally cleared Birdcage in hard mode! It's my new favorite shmup. I love the art and the characters. The story is very interesting and evocative even in this fragmentary form. And that's fine. I don't need to understand every detail. However: What the hell is the tree??? Why was there a space tree? What happened to the space tree? What does the space tree meeeeeean? Ok thank you I will buy more games if you make them

The tree is something that'll come up a bit more if we manage to make more of this, so I won't explicitly say what the thinking was behind it here, just in case.
It's largely symbolic in the way it's used in the final game. At one point it was a location that would've been featured, but when we decided to streamline the game it was left out. The way I think of the tree is as a metaphor for Earth overall, and as an alternate to existence in space as opposed to the Cage. I'd love to explore these ideas more in future media.
