This portrait of a young adolescent is quite striking, due to the contrast between the illuminated figure and the dark, stormy background. The figure’s expression is gentle but stoic, a reflection of the backdrop of the ocean. I’m wondering if the photographer used a bounce to illuminate the subject. This contrast gives an almost otherworldly or spiritual feel to the image, similar to Birth of Venus.

I love the combinations of natural light from the sky combined with the artificial light of streetlamps. The diptych also sets up a striking visual comparison between clouds and trees, creating a dreamy, otherworldly effect, almost like the space between heaven and hell. Each diptych appears carefully chosen, as the compositions mirror and interact with one another.
