The flight-based sections of Kid Icarus: Uprising push the player to navigate enemy projectiles and line up attacks with careful precision. Because of the difficulty this would cause in full-3D movement (as is available when the player is on the ground), these sections are presented as rail shooters, freeing the player to control Pit from an exclusively orthogonal perspective.

Kid Icarus: Uprising ~ Dark Pit Theme
Weird, sad news: Project Sora, the development studio behind Kid Icarus: Uprising, has closed, according to a message on its website. The studio is distinct from Sora Ltd., the company that basically consists only of Masahiro Sakurai (and which owned part of Project Sora). Presumably Sakurai is still employed with Nintendo.
Of course, Nintendo (and Sakurai) are working with Namco Bandai to create Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. That choice makes more sense with the closure of Project Sora – and I can kind of see how it makes sense to work with an established studio instead of a mostly Nintendo-owned, but still functionally independent, studio.
Update: I've been reminded that Project Sora was a temporary operation set up just to make Kid Icarus, so the closure was built into the model. That makes the Namco thing make even more sense, as Namco is just the next "contract" studio to work with Sora Ltd., instead of setting up a new group.

Project Sora Shuts Down
Kid Icarus Uprising developer Project Sora has been closed. If you visit the company's site you will see a message saying that the studio was closed on June 30th and the site will close at the end of July.
Founded in 2009 by Kirby and Super Smash Bros designer Masahiro Sakurai, the independent developer received funding from Nintendo and Sora - Sakurai's primary studio.
Last month, Nintendo announced that Namco Bandai will be creating the next Smash Bros. title, but it was also stated that Project Sora would be in the background assisting, but this is not true anymore
