Draft 1 - Chapter 11

So we are past the deadline but I gave myself an extension, because life happens and sometimes the kindest thing to do is know all you need is a little extra time. This all being said, I am on the cusp of finishing, I have a small amount for chapter 11 left and know that chapter 12 is going to be on the shorter side. I should be able to get it all done tomorrow. If I can do that then I can get it all printed and bound to be able to edit while on holiday. Well at least start the process on holiday, while sitting at a pool and drinking a lovely cocktail.
Hopefully this will be my second to last update for Draft 1.
I am so excited for this to be finished. It will be the first long form story I will have finished, and I am so proud of getting to even this point.

Draft 1 - Chapter 9
Page 70
07.05.2024
It has been a while since I have given any kind of update - not for a lack of working on draft one but having a lot of other things going on in my life. I am resigned from my current job, with the hope of a new one on the horizon, that may pay me something a bit more decent. It is honestly quiet nerve-racking thinking about leaving my current job. In a way I thought I would have been much further along in the book that I am writing when I left than I am, but I simply am unable to handle staying at my current job - anything will be better.
Anyway, back to the actual book progress.
I have gotten to the point of the story where it is all going to have to go to shit in some kind of capacity, and it is harder to figure out and come up with how events unfold next, what characters are choosing to do and how that all reaches the finale of the book.
In many ways I know this first go around is going to be somewhat bad, and I am prepared to hate a lot of what I have written. However, I think I have left myself a challenge for when I do draft two.

It has been a while since I last wrote an update on this project, not because I have stopped working on it, but that my work has been sporadic and inconsistent until recently, specifically when it comes to the writing aspect of it. I have alternatively been watching a few different lectures on writing, mainly the Brandon Sanderson lectures from around 2020 that are on YouTube. With the most recent one I watched having some pretty solid tips when it came to revision. Additionally, I have been spending a bit more time planning and refining my idea of what the end of the story is going to be. As someone that is more a discovery writer planning the end has been hard, but I always had an idea of what it was going to be. I recently took a step back and came to the conclusion that it was a rather weak idea, and have come up with a stronger idea for the end.
From spending a bit more time coming up with a plan I have created a solid deadline of 30.05.2024 to complete draft one. I have been working on this for well over a year, and getting closer to the two year mark, so it has got to this point of wanting to have this draft one finished and over with so I can begin the process of revision.

Draft 1 - Chapter 7
Page 52
28.01.2024
Finally! I have left Chapter 6 behind and have started Chapter 7. I have surpassed 20,000 words and am more than half way through the book, at least what I am anticipating will be half way. I have been writing this project completely without a plan. This first draft is more like an extensive and detailed plan that is going to need a whole lot of refining.
I went back today to look at when I started writing this story and realised it took me about 14 months to write the first 10,000 words and 3 months to write the next 10,000 words. Most of that first 10,000 was written in the last 6 months or so. By this trajectory I should have the first draft done in the next 6 months if I keep doing 10000 in three months. However, I want it to be complete by the end of April, this might be a stretch, but if I really push myself then I could get there.
My current problem is that I am having trouble with pacing. I know this is something I can fix in later drafts, but it is really dawning on me that draft two is going to take significantly more time than anticipated.

Draft 1 - Chapter 6
Page 47
14.01.2024
Chapter Six has become such a long chapter being nearly 4500 words, which when comparing it to my word count is nearly a quater of the book so far. I will probably need completely change and split it apart when I do draft two, but that will be for the big shuffle. [The big shuffle is what I have been calling draft two to myself as I can already tell that the pace of things are needing fixing.] But I have told myself I can just keep writing and all problems (all big problems at least) will be fixed in draft two.

Draft 1 - Chapter 6
Page 46
03.01.2024
We have come to the end of 2023 and looking back I feel like I have accomplished a lot, although perhaps not as much as I would have liked. This being said, I am about half way through my first draft, the last 3 - 4 months were very productive in particular which I am very proud of. My hope is to finish the second half of the draft in the first 4 months of this year.
Additionally, I have made progress towards designing a few different options for the book cover, and have really started to evolve a style of art that will match the book.
One thing I have begun to realise is, that although the aim is to go the traditional publishing route, I could and can self publish this if traditional publishing doesn't work out. It would mean a bit more research, my own money and relying on my own knowledge and skills at certain things. But, it is completely possible.
I am looking forward to this year, if I really knuckle down and focus on writing, I could have something publishable by the end of the year.
Timescale Book Goals:
Finish Draft One by the end of April.
Finish Draft Two by the end of August/September.
Start Draft Three and potentially finish by the end of December.

I have started writing again. November was tough when it came to motivation and achieving some goals I had set. I was ill for the last half of it, and had probably burnt myself out after writing so much initially. However, I am back to writing, it is slow and a little difficult, but I am getting there. My new aim is to finish draft 1 by the end of February, before I go to Texas for a friend's wedding. Which would honestly be very fitting as I started writing this story after a campaign I had made for her and a group of friends, I will be meeting them all there for the first time in person. It is very much a prequel to where they started, all the events that led up to them. A lot of the story has had to change from what I set up for the campaign, but there are definitely things they would recognise throughout.
