Prognan (Croatia)
'Jama (The Pit)' from the 2012 ep 'Jama'
'Zavijase Hromi Vuci' from the 2011 ep 'Vuk'. 'Prognan is a band that started with a vision. vision to create something that will strike the hearts and minds of fellow listeners like thunder from the sky'. Whilst this extract from Prognan's own bio may seem like the boasting of just about any band with skyward hopes, It suddenly seems a lot less like empty posturing after a few spins through the band's fledgling discography. Prognan's music sticks in the mind. They are of their genre, indisputably; A wild, howling beast of Slavic Black Metal, all raw, crashing blastbeat chords and vicious tremolo picking. But there's something else here too. There's melody there without 'Melodic Black Metal' stylings, and rawness without being self-consciously 'KVLT'. Prognan possess an almost unconscious ear for song structures and chord progressions that underpins the black metal madness with an understated yet ever-present musicality. Tracks like Vuk's 'Desperate Cry' have an almost anthemic quality to them, without ever compromising on the lo-fi atmospherics. 2012's Jama ep shows a growing self-confidence in the definition of the three-piece's sound, incorporating more modern, ambient black metal influences in amongst the chainsaw riffage, but the songs are still Prognan's own. It's only in the context of their prosaic genius that a sweeping, 'Post-BM' ambiences can come crashing down into jagged, Immortal style riffs. But the thing that makes Prognan so memorable is that, whatever elements they incorporate into their music, they never over-stretch their ambitions and always remain Prognan. True to the genre and true to themselves, This band are priceless. http://www.reverbnation.com/prognan http://www.myspace.com/prognan
