The function of accounting has changed over the years, moving from the simple task of recording transactions to being the financial intelligence center of the organization. It is instrumental to the organization’s survival, stability, and growth. It analyzes transactional data to produce (a company’s) financial statement (s) such as the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement that present an unbiased view of the company’s financial position. For instance, adequate cash flow, profitability assessment, restraint from overstaffing, and identification of unproductive activities.
Driving Strategic Decisions and Compliance.
The ability to assist in forming strategy is the most significant contribution of modern accounting. Constructive accounting assist in the formulation of budgets, forecasting, and the performing of variance analysis. Managers can then be in a position to make informed decisions in the prudent allocation of resources, effective planning of growth in the organization, and proactive responses to changes in the business environment. Also, accounting plays a key role in regulatory compliance. Compliance to accounting standards (GAAP or IFRS) is a requirement for transparency which is an important aspect in gaining and maintaining the confidence of investors, creditors and regulators from the government. If accurate accounting is not maintained, then up to scale management will not be in place.
