Sigmento Launches First On-demand Product Information Platform for Retailers
(PRWEB) NOVEMBER 21, 2016
SIGMENTO, a data technology innovator, today announced the launch of its Product Information as a Service platform that provides retailers with optimized product information for their entire catalog on-demand.
In 2015, the eCommerce industry totalled $1.7 trillion in sales worldwide, and is expected to continue growing at 20% every year. Largely fueled by the emergence of shopping on mobile devices, and omni-channel presence of retailers, this growth creates significant data challenges for retailers. It is estimated that 75% of top retailers have inaccurate, missing, or inconsistent product information.
Sigmento’s Product Information as a Service platform, which is already used by some of the largest retailers in the world, provides product information that is statistically validated, optimized for search engines and marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon, Google and Bing. This allows retailers to add endless product pages to their website or marketplace stores without depending on manual data teams and inconsistent data feeds from manufacturers.
Sigmento’s on-demand product information platform is fully web based, can easily work with any eCommerce management or Product Information Management solution, and is very intuitive. It’s advanced data mining technologies gather product information from thousands of sources. Sigmento optimizes this information, while adding unique content such as product titles crafted specifically for each product using Natural Language Generation, to provide retailers with accurate product information on-demand.
Yoav Maor, COO of Sigmento, adds, “Many retailers want to create massive catalogs, offering customers the “endless aisle”, but are limited because of the time and resources it takes to find, create and standardize product information for each item. Sigmento’s platform provides retailers with a simple solution to get optimized product information on-demand, allowing retailers to add items to their online stores at scale, while maximizing visibility and traffic from search engines and marketplaces.”
Important eBay Requirements May Be Reducing Your Sales
eBay has often been described as a “garage sale” experience although with at least 25 million sellers and 6 billion products on its Marketplace platform, it is a fairly large garage. Like a garage sale where one can “poke around” and find great deals, eBay has followed a somewhat similar format. The drawback to such a model is that for those that are not looking to “poke around” or spend a long time searching for a great deal, eBay at time provided a frustrating customer experience. Sellers on eBay need to manually enter all of the relevant information which creates discrepancies in data, making it difficult for buyers and sellers to find products using specific keywords.
Multiple sellers might list the same product, but describe it differently, making the eBay’s left hand filtering ineffective. As an example, a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses might be listed as “Ray-Ban sunglasses” by one seller, while another might have the specific model number listed, while a third would list the UPC code and a full manufacturer description. Finding a treasure at a garage sale can be a rewarding experience, but for those looking for a specific product, or trying to compare prices, the experience can prove frustrating.
eBay is moving to address this issue by requiring sellers to follow a uniform structured data format when listing their products. eBay’s goal is to transform it’s gigantic marketplace into a uniform digital catalog that buyers can easily browse through. Price comparison will be more reliable since all identical products can be compared using product identifiers that are now mandatory in certain categories. Sellers benefit by having their products clearly attached and displayed in relevant searches both within eBay and on search engine results, increasing visibility, traffic, and sales.
What are these new requirements, and what do they mean for eBay sellers? First announced in March of 2015, and implemented in June of 2015,eBay began requiring sellers to include product identifiers (MPN, GTINs, UPCs, and ISBNs) for single items in selected categories. On September 1st 2015, eBay expanded this to included products with variations as well. The categories that require product identifiers are:
Baby
Books, Comics & Magazines
Business, Office & Industrial
Cameras & Photography
Clothes, Shoes & Accessories
Computers/Tablets & Networking
DVDs, Films & TV
Health & Beauty
Home, Furniture & DIY
Mobile Phones & Communication
Music
Musical Instruments
Pet Supplies
Sound & Vision
Sporting Goods
Toys & Games
Vehicle Parts & Accessories
Video Games & Consoles
The requirement is currently only for branded products which are listed as new or manufacturer refurbished items. Sellers who list used, collectable, vintage or one-of-a-kind products will not need to include product identifiers. Around 80% of all products listed on eBay are new, so this change will have a significant impact on the majority of products sold on eBay. As of February 29th 2016, eBay officially started to enforce this requirement.
Sellers are able use the eBay app to scan a barcode and have the full product information completed, including brand, model, dimensions, etc. While this may be helpful for new listings to ensure that product identifiers are included (and help build the “catalog”) , there are many sellers with hundreds or thousands of existing product listings that all now require product identifiers. Has eBay considered the challenge this requirement will place on these sellers?
An initial look at how eBay enforces these new requirements indicates that eBay has considered the challenge this new requirement poses to some of their sellers. Given that some eBay sellers have hundreds if not thousands of products this is not a quick process, however sellers also have a vested interest in ensuring their products have these identifiers – aside for helping them display better on eBay, these product identifiers (which are universal) can also help achieve better search engine results. Additionally, product reviews can also be linked since the reviews can be connected to the product identifier.
There has been some initial negative feedback in terms of sellers complaining that some of the products that eBay requires product identifiers for are not readily available, or that the eBay app has issues scanning some of the codes, however we are still in the early stages of the roll-out, and these may just be some kinks in a new system. It remains to be seen if this change will allow eBay to compete more effectively with the likes of Amazon (or Alibaba), but at the very least, this should make for a more streamlined “catalog like” shopping experience.
5 Product Catalog Best Practices That Turn Viewers Into Customers
Online sellers can no longer afford to skip out on providing product information for their catalog. Nowadays, online shoppers rarely buy products for which detailed information is missing. These shoppers look for rich, consistent, and complete product information whenever they think of buying anything online. As shoppers cannot physically hold and evaluate a product when shopping online, a product without adequate information will make it much more difficult for a customer to make a purchase decision. A product catalog with detailed, accurate product information will build trust and confidence among customers which in turn will lead to more sales.
If you examine product pages created by different companies, you will find that some go for a direct approach, displaying the image of their product and explaining why someone should buy it. Others create elaborate pages with moving parts and impressive elements.
So, what are the main product elements that an online seller should consider while displaying the product catalog to generate more sales?
Product Title – Creating unique titles which are SEO friendly will assist in bringing in more customer traffic to your online store from search engine and on marketplaces.
Optimized Categories – Optimized product categories is critical. E-Commerce site’s architecture has a major impact on achieving higher rankings and providing the best possible user experience. Organizing product pages into categories that are easy to understand, search, and follow can improve page ranking leading to higher page views. Additionally, placing products in right categories of marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay will increase their visibility and bring you more traffic.
Images – Did you know that people remember 80% of what they see and only 20% of what they read? Images are the most important aspect of product data. The influence of an image is hard to ignore, and if you are not including high quality images of your products then you are most probably losing out on some serious sales.
Description – Product content plays an important role in the e-commerce customer experience. Always make sure you have effective and lively product descriptions to engage viewers and make them more likely to buy your product. Writing your own descriptions can be daunting, the sheer amount of text required for product descriptions can be time-consuming and your company might be losing money. Because of this, it is advised to outsource it to experts who can manage your product catalog information.
Standardized Attributes – Customers want more than basic specifications, they look for specific and relevant attributes that give them all the information they need to make a confident purchase decision. Accurate product attributes which are uniquely relevant to a particular product will allow a customer to make this decision without leaving your site to find this information.
Great, accurate product data builds trust in your brand and increases consumer confidence in your product offering so that shoppers are willing to buy. First impressions are everything. Many store owners spend time tweaking their homepage but often forget about the importance of a well-designed product page and accurate product information.
Choosing an appropriate way to showcase your products is essential, as it can either drive shoppers to make a purchase or click away from your store.
