Research for 'Bar Shorts'.
Been a fan of Chris Cunningham's work for many years now. This video for Aphex Twin is surreal and disturbing-maybe the kind of angle I'm going for rather than the humorous. Dark, weird, sinister, unreal and vivid are all words that spring to mind for what I'm thinking of producing.

1 Second Film Project.
A very different angle on the 1 second film and Full Secs is this collaborative project.
‘There are 24 frames in one second of film. Each frame of our film is a 5ft x 9ft painting. The finished paintings animate when filmed in sequence. Each frame of the animation had its own art director and was painted by hundreds of people during an all-night collaborative animation event that took place on March 8th, 2001.’
The process here perhaps shows what exactly goes into producing 1 second of film and that it can be a very different process than you think.
I really want to try something different here-need a lot more research doing before firming up ideas as everything I’ve so far had already seems to have been done, ie, 1 second films based on movies ( Die Hard). Maybe the way its produced can be the way it’s made differently-rather than looking at After Effects maybe try a more traditional approach. I should really consider this seriously as a way to make something very different than I've seen so far.

This is the second part of the two part brief-in a nutshell we have to create 3, 5 second stings/idents to be sandwiched between the films (like this one) being shown at Bar Short events.
From the brief-'Create 3 stings that can sit between the Bar Shorts features. These need to sit as a set and can have a narrative running through BUT need to be able to exist separately as well. The stings will be animated and can be done in a team.
These can be embraced whatever your technical knowledge as can be done in anything from photoshop animation, after effects to filming and beyond.'
So can pretty well do whatever I like, but really want my stings to stand out from the films being shown. This can be achieved, but as the films are really varied, with lots of different kind of production techniques ,content and subject matter, ranging from odd, offensive, to bizarre. They all generally feature humour. As these events aren't really taking themselves that seriously (though I'm not saying the techniques, skill, ideas on show aren't seriously thought out). They take place in Bars so everyone is out for a good time. So in subject matter terms anything of a serious nature, eg cancer, that will completely buzz-kill the atmosphere is out..Having said that using a very serious subject and twisting it somehow would suit this kind of event. These stings are not the main event-just fillers, but it would be great to upstage the main event somehow.
This needs serious thought.
Right now I need to get researching short films, stories etc, maybe even TV adverts to see how they communicate ideas, emotions, stories quickly and stay in your mind.
As its told over 3 separate stings then there is a definite, Beginning-Middle -End. To it-that is if I'm following a standard kind of narrative.

Seems Trevor Beattie has now embraced 'new' media, Youtube, vine etc and proclaims that the 30 second advert is dead. Somehow I very much doubt this but rather we will see more and more short span adverts-after all I'm one of many who immeadiatly click through adverts once Youtube prompts me to 'Skip to Video'. Though the power of TV should not be overlooked.
Still its a interesting point he's making as advertisers look to sell products and message in the quickest time possible, exactly how clever narratives or brands can promote themselves is worth exploring more for this brief as the solutions they have come up with can possibly be appropriated for The Bar Shorts.
Trevor Beattie, the man behind some of the UK's most famous TV ads including Wonderbra's Hello Boys and French Connection's FCUK, has claimed that modern technology has killed the 30-second TV commercial.
Beattie, who has built his career on creating ads that fit the standard 30 and 60-second format of TV commercials, said that the only really long-form content that should exist these days is "Attenborough and movies" in a world where we snack on content and live a "tapas existence".
"I'm announcing the death of the 30-second TV ad – it is too long, it is bullshit," he said, speaking at the Advertising Week Europe conference in London on Monday. "Five seconds is the right length. One of the ways of getting noticed is to change the standard unit of consumption, that unit is 30 seconds and it is boring."
Beattie has introduced what he referred to as the "five-second rule", that in the modern technology age of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter consumers have become much quicker at analysing messages.
"30 second [TV ads] are ridiculously long, it is a lifetime," he said. "People know within two seconds if they like something. The absorption of information is so fast these days it is amazing."
He quipped that Jamie Oliver's attempt to move from a TV show with 30 minute meals to 15 minute meals was just an example of that cut-down approach.
