Process Book Development
I changed the font for the headings to Neutral Face, which I found by accident. I was conducting a more detailed research for the Food Types project and was particularly looking at Vadim Aksiev's cookbook designs. I liked his projects, so I looked up what else he does and saw his typefaces, which seemed perfect to what I was looking for. At first I had a marker font for headings, but it didn't fit the style of my notes, so I decided to use a font similar to the one I use for body text instead, but, again, struggled to find one that was bald, clean and even enough.
I also tried applying some colour, but decided it was better to leave everything black and white for now and see if I would lack colour in my process book later.
Process Book layouts
As I mentioned earlier, I think images would look better if they weren't on a white background, as the contrast would be less emphasised. Also, the colour on the background in some places would help me to separate the different parts of my book.
Since I take notes during tutorials, I decided to maintain the same style as on the thumbnail page by using a handwritten font.
Sketches
This page probably took me the longest to get it to a state I'm almost happy with. When I placed the raw images of the sketches, I realised that the clarity of the images was very poor, as were the colours in the pictures. It seemed to me that even if I scanned these sketches, they still wouldn't look as clear as if I had redrawn them, as some fragments were torn or smeared.
So I photographed them and outlined the main lines in Procreate. I then added them to my spread and started playing with the layout. I also wanted to bring my notes into the process book and place them throughout the book in places that required my comments. I also like that the process book really shows the process of my work, as I always write little reminders next to my sketches or when I do test prints of any work, I usually comment on elements that I like and those that need further development.
I also tried adding a splash of colour and making the spread more fun and interesting. I didn't like how the extra letters in the background mess up the page, so I'll keep experimenting with other options.
As for the fonts for my notes, I'm not quite happy with the way they look yet. The first one I chose does match the style of my sketches, but looks too neat in my opinion. This wouldn't be a problem for me if I didn't want to add a bit of clutter to my process book to actually recreate my creative process. The second font is pretty much what I want to see in my notebook, but it has too much texture and is rather boxy, which doesn't help with the fact that other elements such as images, colour boxes and text boxes already have that shape. So with my illustrations and notes I want to balance this out. So I will continue to look for rough handwritten fonts and test them out in my design.
Typefaces for my process book
Some of the chosen fonts looked quite different from what I imagined them to look like in my spreads when I saw them on google fonts. So I ended up only using Noto Sans JP Regular for the paragraphs and Permanent Marker, as they create a great balance between boldness and neatness.
