Got a bit frustrated with this painting today, the colors came out rather muddy and I tried to save it with the orange but it didn't really help. I'll let it rest for a bit now. It's not the worst but I think a lot of nice color interactions went away from layering it too dark. For example the triangles in the middle are way too dark while they should blend in more with the rest of the pig.
I learned an important lesson, stay away from the dark colors for as long as possible, because its very hard to come back from.
My initial idea for the Reds was different, and I think if I executed it that way, it would actually have worked better. The idea was to only make the middle triangle red and fill in the rest with green so the head of the pig becomes one large shape, broken up by the red. I think I will do a layer of gesso (after letting it rest) and then trying this out, because especially for now, this painting is pissing me off 😅
On a better note, I'm successfully recovering another painting I was working on lately, I'm very happy with the orange under layer.
It doesn't capture too well on photograph but in reality it looks quite sharp and I'm excited to get started again on this one!
Enjoying the process on this painting, it's acrylic on a wooden panel. I was already quite happy with the underlayer but felt like I could add some more depth to make it pop even more. I decided to not touch the left and right top edges, it seemed to me that this negative space could make the painting more meaningful. The painting depicts a woman laying in a cave, or tunnel. It's inspired on a monument in the center of Brussels that commemorates the covering of the Zenne river, which used to run through the city but is now invisible.
