#pro-nouns

So most of the time when reading a textbook you kind of skim over the words and nothing really strikes you as odd. But when reading my textbook tonight I was a little shocked. For every example in my text or any reference to a person my text 95% of the time used "she"/"her" pronouns unless otherwise stated by name that the person referenced was a man. Now i know this probably doesn't sound so weird, but honestly it is. When looking at my other texts it was the opposite that was true (generally used "him"/"he" pronouns unless otherwise stated). But what truly made me feel odd is the fact that this all made me feel uncomfortable. It felt strange to me that my texts base was "she"/"her". It felt odd, alien even. It made it almost feel like it didn't flow right. This made me think a lot about media and texts and how this must effect young girls who one day will become professionals. Their whole lives they are bombarded by literary texts (lord of the flies, great gatsby, Tom Sawyer, etc.) that are all male "he"/"him" bases, and textbooks whose default is "he"/"him". I know this is already a common topic of discussion in the community, in fact i talk about the every growing show of hyper masculinity and the male dominance in the media, but today it really struck a cord with me.

On a related note: would the correct word here be “is” or “are”? I mean, if “they” is being used as the pro-noun for one non-binary person, then it makes sense to use “is”, so as to avoid confusion as to how many people are being referred to. Besides, I think that with the official and formal introduction of “they” as an acceptable gender neutral pro-noun for non-binary people, it would make sense for it to follow the same rules as the already established gendered pro-nouns. e.g. “She is very polite” vs “He are a very good poet”.

I am a female, vegan, pro-choice, non-cis white other-kin. My preferred pro-nouns are washloshibouguk, washloshibougukm and washloshibouguks. Am I making sense? Good. 

I am a feminist who believes in equality. Men are inferior to women in every possible way, and I think its about time society realised this. Men are so privileged, and so I have made it my mission to get all urinals taken out of mens bathrooms and redesigned for women.

In my free time I am an activist, so naturally this takes up a lot of my day. I usually help support the anti gamer-gate contingent on twitter, Reddit and other forums. My favourite subreddit is /r/shitredditsays. That sub is so cool.
