I was going to post something commenting on finishing watching The 100, and I probably will later this evening, but something else is on my mind right now. Some, if not all, of my followers will have heard about the abuse some people in the SPN fandom have been getting. Anonymous attackers targeting vulnerable people and goading them into suicide attempts. This has been serious enough to prompt responses on twitter from the likes of Mark Sheppard, Osric Chau, Ruth Connell, and probably others from the SPN family, showing support for the people attacked. I know there is a chance that this story is a fake, that no one has in fact harmed themselves, but I also have personal experience with anonymous abuse over the internet. I have seen first hand the effect it can have on people. Vicious anons can be damaging, they can hurt, they can have real and severe impact on lives. It's so easy for people to say to ignore it, to say that people are weak for letting the messages have power over them, but the truth is that it is so much harder than that. So this story in particular may or may not be true, but the harsh reality is that anon abuse happens. And it hurts, so much. Behind each and every blog and post, there is a real person. With strengths and flaws and a heart. It can be so easy to forget that sometimes.
So, to each and every person who reads this, no matter who they are, I say this. Do not ignore anonymous abuse, on Tumblr or anywhere else. Do not condone or dismiss it. If you see someone being hit by it, support them. If you ever find out about someone actually doing it, condemn and shun them. Bullies should never be tolerated, and that goes for the online community as much as in person. It doesn't matter what your chosen fandom or character or ship is. It doesn't matter if the victim doesn't like your OTP but the abuser does. It doesn't matter if you have different favourite cities or colours or food. There is Right and there is Wrong in the world and everyone should have the balls to stand up for what it Right. Humanity is supposed to mean something, so let's work together to damn well show it. End the bullying. All of us.
