Riley's big, beautiful heart! (Pro-Riley essay)
I feel I should defend Riley Matthews because there is literally no reason a twelve year old girl with the purest intentions who just so happens to meddle in people's lives should receive so much distaste/hate.
Seriously, she is only thinking of others when she gets involved. And when she gets involved, she usually ends up solving the problem for everyone in a positive way. Why is she frowned upon for that?
There is literally only one time in GMW canon during which her hopes were not realized entirely, and that was between Maya and her mother. Of course, if Maya is Shawn 2.0 and BMW canon holds any water at all ever - which it does - that is just going to be a major project over the course of the coming seasons of GMW.
Stop hating on a girl who only wants everyone to be happy and understanding towards others. She wants to save her best friend from becoming lost in "the universe"; let her! She's the only one who really can. She wants to save Farkle from feeling like he's literally nothing, like he's scum, due to another character's insecurity and jealousy; see how quickly she found and utilized a solution and helped everyone! She wanted Lucas, the boy she likes, to feel at home away from the place he's always called home; she goes on a search to find his friends from out-of-state and, not only that, but gets them to send a video message to lift his spirits in New York! She wants to understand dear Uncle Shawn and get him and her father to open up - as well as Maya - because she knows it's what's best (and let's not pretend it isn't, especially in Shawn and Maya's cases); she starts a dialogue between all of them and gets Shawn to admit that he's doing the same thing he's been doing all his life - running away from the things he fears most. Things like change. Things like a potential future.
This girl is amazing and pure and just wants everyone happy. Yes, she meddles, but she does so bearing no ill will or selfish desires or hopes for glory and entitlement.
You may try to argue about her "I have my eyes on a much bigger prize" line sounding self-centered, but even that was simply about trying to find her best friend Maya a kindred spirit in Shawn (and vice-versa).
Bottom line, this girl is only in the meddling game for others and definitely not to sate her own ego. And, at some point, yes, she will probably learn (as Feeny taught Topanga in BMW) that there are times when she must stand back and not get involved because she can't be the one who always fixes everything.
But right now she's twelve. Right now she's a young girl who has been inspired by her parents and their story and she just wants the best for everyone and believes that it's part of her place in the universe to help them achieve that.
