I don't hate Vaggie, nor do I want to

I may not like her

I may think she's both a waste of space in the story and missed potential

I may think that her and Charlie's relationship is boring and unhealthy

I may think that she's too clingy when it comes to Charlie

I may think that she'd be better off with Velvette because I know for a fact that Velvette would not be taking that "I need to serve you to have purpose." bulshit from her partner. (Plus Vel is close enough to the chaotic energy Charlie has that I think Vaggie likes about Charlie. And she has a good enough head on her shoulders that I don’t think Vaggie would have to feel the need to reel her in. I’ve never really liked the trope of “Chaotic ball of energy & their partner who has to keep them in line.” That just feels infantilizinf to me and like their partner has to “babysit” them, which is a whole Nother ballpark.)

I may not like Vaggie because I think she’s boring

all of these are reasons that I do not like her…

but that doesn’t mean other people can’t! that doesn’t mean other people aren’t allowed to like her! you’re not a bad person for liking a particular character! And nobody has the right to tell you that! Are some characters questionable and problematic to have as your fav? Yeah, undoubtably. I don’t think Vaggie is one of those though. (also having a problematic fav, doesn’t really matter either. People should just get to like what they like in fiction. Anti-censorship and anti-“wrong think” and all that)

If you like Vaggie I’m so happy for you! If you like a drawing fan art of her or writing fanfiction that is completely okay with me! I want you to keep doing that! Especially because it brings you joy!

I want to like Vaggie as a character! And I have such an interesting idea for her arc, which is why so far she’s really been the central focus of Has-Been Amongst Hazbins!

just because I don’t like Vaggie in canon, doesn’t mean I don’t like the concept of her or the ideas that could be explored through her

there is a wealth of possibilities for her! We just learned she had a girlfriend before Charlie! How does that play into the chaggie dynamic? Is that why she was so afraid before to tell Charlie? Is that part of the reason why she didn’t want to go to heaven in episode six?

you could have so much material to work with if you just dived a little deeper into Vaggie. Why did she join the exorcists? Was she forced? If she was specifically made for the exorcists, then maybe her next step is finding a purpose in life (outside of the hotel) maybe she picks up a hobby or starts a club! She seems pretty athletic, Why doesn’t she try to start a rec center for sports in hell? That could give her a good parallel between her and Charlie.

Charlie’s trying to get people out of hell whereas Vaggie’s trying to help the souls in hell now.

if you follow me and you like Vaggie that’s great, that’s wonderful! I’m thrilled that even though I don’t, you can still find enjoyment in my other content or maybe you can appreciate the good I do see in her potential! i’m just glad that we can come together as adults and have differing opinions without it being a Tumblr war

and hey, if you are like me and you don’t like Vaggie or if you’re taking it to the extreme and you do hate her and you follow me, I can understand that! just please remember to be respectful. I don’t want to tear other people down. And I don’t want to hurt other people.

and if you see this, and you don’t like me because I dislike her, you are perfectly within your right to do so. I’m sorry that we can’t let bygones be bygones but if you gotta do what you gotta do, I respect that.

But please do not come to my blog to hate on people who do like Vaggie. If you wanna hate the character that’s fine that’s within your right. If you’re going to trash on the fans, that is where I draw a line. It’s one thing to be mad at colored pixels on a screen (I know I’ve had many gripes with Alastor and recently Verosika) but that does not give anyone the excuse to say horrible things about actual people.

I had a bit of a situation in one of my comments recently, and I’m making my stance perfectly clear.

you don’t have to like me you don’t have to like Vaggie. You don’t have to like or dislike or even hate anything I like or otherwise. But I will not be accepting negativity on my blog. We do not call for violence or the wishing of people to not exist about anyone!

I just realized I went off on kind of a tangent at the end of this and it goes more into some critical stuff so if you just wanna stop reading now and focus on all the good that I think Vaggie has feel free to do so

this whole thing was prompted by somebody on “Displaying a Moth” recently.

In that fanfiction, (it’s only one chapter right now) my intent is to tighten up aspects of the story by having other characters fill Vaggie’s shoes because I firmly believe that she could be cut, and her scenes could be given to other characters. I think it would be a net positive for the series because we gotta get more character moments between characters who have been lacking time together.

however, I think I was a little unclear to the people who were reading that story. The reason I’m writing that is because I wants to demonstrate that less is more. You don’t need 100 characters to write a good story. It’s hard to juggle even five in a main group. Hazbin started us out with six in the pilot, cherrisnake as secondary characters and from the pitch bible episode two was going to introduce Baxter a seventh character.

then you look at the actual show! episode one introduced two new characters being Adam and Lute and Adam’s barely gotten any characterization past “asshole misogynist”.

episode two introduces Pentious into the main cast and three new characters (the Vees) that would get developed in this and the next two episodes. Episode three introduces Carmilla, and establishes a rivalry with Velvette that doesn’t go anywhere even in season two.

and then episode four finally slows down and we can have a conversation between some of the characters that have been established for the first four episodes, including the pilot!

that’s 12 characters!

and can you look me in the eyes and say that you can tell me how Husk would interact with Carmilla? Can you tell me how Cherri Bomb and Velvette would react to each other? What about Pentious and Valentino?

and you know what? The series knows I’m right because Charlie—when she’s sobbing in season two episode one over Pentious—says, “He truly was the best of us… or at least the most… snake.”

Pentious was a kind sweetheart once Charlie actually accepted him! By episode three he’s given up villainy and only tries to build a death laser to protect himself because he’s never been in an environment that he’s truly felt accepted! And Charlie can’t even say “yeah, Pentious was actually the best of us!”

she didn’t know him that well! they barely spoken season one! they had one heart to heart, one trust fall confession (which is used as a joke), and then they never interact again.

Charlie’s entire character has revolved around Vaggie the entirety of season one and then season two it’s revolved entirely around Vox!

if you want a big cast, you need to know how to utilize your time. you can’t just have the same character pairings every single time. I don’t even think Vaggie and Husk would like each other (they may like being around each other because the other wouldn’t talk probably, but I can’t say they’d actually be friends!)

and that is why I wanted to write “Displaying a Moth”. I don’t hate Vaggie. I just think that she hasn’t done anything that contributes to the plot of the overall story.

Angel has an entire sub plot about Valentino, and how Val is physically and sexually abusing him.

Husk was an overlord and he is most likely going to play a huge role in angel’s story coming up in season three. Rosie is either Eve or Lilith so she’ll be connected to the hotel anyway, and Al’s connected through her. Both of them are intertwined, they cannot be removed, and they’ll be vital either season three or maybe season five? Season four is going to be about Velvette apparently. (honestly you could also cut Carmilla and just have a big box in an empty warehouse called “guns here” on the front. She’s also very useless character.

imagine if she was an antagonist! why not have her be the antagonist of the first season? If Charlie proves that angel’s can be redeemed then the exterminations will stop. Which in turn means her supply of weapons stops. Not the point.)

my point is that while I don’t like Vaggie and I think she could be removed, I don’t want other people to stop liking her. And I don’t want other people to make comments about others.
