Hello! A trick taking place during TEY please :3
Hiya Solaris! Although a bit later than intended, I present to you this year's trick! It's a bit longer than I thought, so I'll leave the first bit here and the rest you can read on AO3 :3
Some goodbyes come too soon
It took Arald a moment to understand why Halt didn’t finish his sentence. When the young man sprinted through the forest, he ran after him. He was about to ask what Halt had seen when he noticed the body.
Arald stayed where he was; far enough to give Halt some moment alone, but nearby enough to reach out if the Ranger needed him.
The young knight lowered his head the moment Halt did. He didn’t know Pritchard on a personal level, but he had heard of the man’s name. Pritchard was a living legend, not just among the Rangers but also outside the Corps.
Arald looked up when Halt turned around to face him. There was some dirt on his cheeks, but not that it mattered.
“Change of plan,” Halt said. His voice had lost the doubtful tone Arald had heard earlier on. “We bring him home first.”
Halt knelt next to the motionless body, moving around the clothes here and there. He wasn’t sure why he did it, maybe to cover up the stab wounds.
“Go back to the camp and let some soldiers prepare a cart to lay him on,” Halt said, his eyes focused on the man’s face. “I’ll stay with him.”
Arald took a slow breath and stepped forward, kneeling next to Halt. He placed a hand on his arm, gentle, as if he was unsure what Halt would do.
“Halt,” Arald started. He saw that the man didn’t move his head to look at him. But he also didn’t push Arald’s hand away.
“Return to Castle Araluen and report what happened,” Arald continued, carefully choosing his words.
Halt immediately shook his head. No way, he thought.
“I’m not leaving him alone. Not again.”
