Page 3. --- A petition by Sylva Lafortune to be released on bail from the Montreal jail, where he is detained for trial on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to his wife by striking her on the head with a hammer, was presented before Mr. Justice Salvas in the Superior Court today. Hearing of the petition was postponed to August 4.

At his arraignment in the criminal court, Lafortune said in his petition, no application was made for bail on his behalf until the gravity of the injuries claimed to have been suffered by his wife, became known.
