“Lan Zhan?” His voice was barely a whisper, an attempt not to wake up the others in the rooms around them. “Lan Zhan?” More insistent this time, even though Wei Wuxian knew it was the hours that he would be sleeping. “Lan Zhan, are you asleep?” Rhetorical question, he could tell by the steady rise and fall of his chest that he had been deep in slumber before the interruptions. “I need you to wake up; I want you to see something.” There was an urgency in his voice, a child-like quality that made it impossible to temper his excitement.
Likely, he was going to get himself yelled at, or at the very least he’d be given that look. Still, that didn’t stop him from grabbing ahold of the other man’s arm, dragging him across the room and toward the wide-open window of the room they’d rented for the night. His eyes lit up, almost as bright as the dancing fireflies he could hardly wait for Lan Zhan to see – and he knew it was worth it, even if he got reprimanded, just to share that sight with the man than he loved more than he loved himself. Hundreds, perhaps a thousand, brilliant yellow lights lit up the backdrop of dark mountains. “Look at all the fireflies.” Breathless excitement colored his tone, had him staring at the constant flickering just beyond their reach. “Aren’t they beautiful?”
