Most printers include itty-bitty identifying code on all printed pages. These are printed in color.
Most significantly (to me), this is how you get a nice rich black color. Black ink isn’t totally pitch black by itself; if printed alone, it would look more like a very dark grey. In order to get a deep black color from a standard printer, you have to mix/overlay partial tones of all three colors (CMY), in addition to black (K).
