Margins of the Multiple
Recently, I was fortunate enough to participate in a collaborative printstallation project around Iowa City. I worked with Louise Fisher and Jeanne Smith to create a wheatpaste installation, titled Mellifluous. Our installation can be seen in the alleyway behind the Paper Nest at 220 E. Washington St.
In addition, the Margins of the Multiple gallery show at Public Space One features works by 11 participating artists, and includes a map if you’d like to check out all of the installations on site. Below is the description from the show.
Margins of the Multiple is a print-based group exhibition, organized by Louise Fisher, at Public Space One and in the streets, parks, and shops of Iowa City. A team of a dozen artists has secured sites and situations for presenting their print-based work in the public realm, both sanctioned and unsanctioned. Margins presents the culmination of collaborative artwork exploring the multiplicity of print media and public audience. The participating artists met over the course of three months to discuss both the technical and conceptual implications of presenting printmaking outside of the traditional gallery settings. Some artists worked individually while others teamed up based on their common interests and artistic style. The work could not be fully conceived ahead of time, as the installations were often site-specific and relied on teamwork. This exhibition acts as a collection of documentation of prints being presented outside of the traditional realm, i.e. the context of the gallery. The temporary, site-specific, multi-media nature of these installations undermines the profitability of the work and instead leaves the viewer solely with the experience of viewing/interacting with it. The work in the gallery presents the documentation as well as traces of each installed piece.
