I just finished this yesterday and I am still pondering it. The beginning was absolutely fascinating, about Bari, the seventh daughter in a family in North Korea in the 1990s, as the economy slows down, grinds to a halt, then explodes into chaos — scapegoating, famine, and fire, with the death of their leader. It’s a story of emigration, suffering, and survival, wrapped up with and told through the lens of an old Korean legend of Princess Bari — who is discarded but goes on an epic journey to find the life-giving water that will end suffering and set everything right. . .
