By the following day the dense Scotch mist had cleared, and the wind had died down a wee bit… but not a great deal, for it was still exceedingly blustery.

As the clouds were rushing across the sky at considerable speed, there were times when the sun managed to break through and bring colour back to the world, but it was soon eclipsed by huge black masses which suddenly rained down a battering, silvery mixture of water and chunks of ice, without so much as a by-your-leave…

Under these circumstances the garden was of course exceedingly wet, but that meant that when the sun did manage to find a break in the clouds, the plants lit up with much brighter colours, and there were even some early flowers to be seen here and there.

In one of the sunny intervals, Algy flew over to an old bird bath, which like most things in the garden leaned sideways at quite an angle, owing to the constant force of the wind. Perching briefly on the wet vegetation at its foot, Algy gazed in wonder at the patch of magenta primulas which grew in that spot, for they were always among the very first flowers of spring, and always brought a huge smile to his face, as their colourful faces told him that despite the bitter weather the winter was truly over for this year. He reflected:

In time of silver rain The earth puts forth new life again, Green grasses grow And flowers lift their heads, And over all the plain The wonder spreads Of life, Of life, Of life! In time of silver rain The butterflies lift silken wings To catch a rainbow cry, And trees put forth new leaves to sing In joy beneath the sky As down the roadway Passing boys and girls Go singing, too, In time of silver rain When spring And life Are new.
