This was a good one to ponder about for me. With his normal tributes to #Rome and #Asbestos, #Basquiat adds what appears to me as a pyramid of possibly dedication to or a totem pole speaking against #MuseumSecurity. • When I look at this work I see all the things that a museum security team would come across during a routine sweep of museum premises. Things like the aforementioned asbestos, possible cigar smoke (at that time) and #pricelessart. I like to believe he looks at the security as a deterrent, someone possibly chasing him and others out of those spaces which could be why the green on the white background is crossed out for the red giving it a more sinister look/feel. I think the red star accentuates the color of the lettering fitting what appears to be a figure (guard?) at the waistline indicating where the security would have his utensils. • Words like FBI, Law and a cell like figure with the word “Sheriff” right above makes me think of placement, as in “You don’t belong here”. One thing you can’t miss either is the word “ORAPO” repeated across the canvas in different sizes and hues (and sometimes Black Orapo). As how much did it cost to get in museums in the 70’s? I doubt it was 5 cents but that made me think of admission or something of a storefront. Can’t figure out why.
