a few years ago she posted some shit that was cultural appropriation in one of the tags. when she got called out she said she was wiccan. then she deleted and remade, as an iroquois woman this time (which afaik people don’t really call themselves iroquois bc that’s not a singular tribe). mowakgagakshi on here remembers talking to her back then and specifically remembers her claiming to be iroquois.

now i know she claims to be cherokee and i think choctaw too. she lives out in california and has been showing off ca native shit like she’s a part of those tribes too.

I really wish I would have consistently tagged people. Basically these are mainly asks that people sent about what Digatisdi said or did to them. There’s a reblog of a chart he made of his ancestry. Someone from tumblr YEARS ago who I was friends with made an anon post about what Digatisdi told them. It’s pretty funny when compared to what his chart had on it. When I first got on tumblr, I was so excited to come across other people who were native or had native ancestors. I didn’t know much about my native roots, just that my paternal great-grandma was supposedly Cherokee (Like everyone, right?) I started talking to a lot of Cherokee people, some real, some I’m pretty sure faked. I was totally excited! However, I saw that a lot of these people had stories that changed quite often. Some were painfully obvious that they didn’t know what they were talking about. So I deleted every trace of my identity from my blog. 

I met my IRL best friend when I was 14, and she is a card-carrying member of the Cherokee Nation. She was such a blessing because once we started talking about our heritage and such, I learned that my family just may be on to something. We would talk about superstitions that our families had that our other friend didn’t know about. She showed me her books that she got in Tahlequah and invited me to her family gatherings. Then I had the amazing privilege to meet a woman from Oklahoma who was part of the Eastern Band and taught at Haskell Indian Nations University. She spoke with me and gave me some resources, but she also told me something that really stuck with me.

She reminded me that there were a lot of native people who did marry white people, and those people sometimes chose to stay back and try to pass as white during the relocation. She told me that there are a lot of people who cannot genuinely prove things from a census, but who have native fingerprints all over their culture. She said to me a Chinese American who came to the states during the gold rush didn’t live through the Cultural Revolution, but regardless of their different presents they still had the same history.

After that, I completely unfollowed a majority of the natives (and “natives”) I had been following. I decided to pursue this as a learning experience, not as a proving experience. By doing that, it really exposed many of the fakes that I had tried to turn to for advice, one of them being Eric.

If I HAD to pick an “AHA!” moment with digatisdi, it would probably be when he told this ridiculous story about how he saw a concert sign for a Tribe Called Quest and he ran out in slippers because he thought it was a Tribe Called Red. He proceeded to elaborate with this dumb story about bullshit I really don’t feel up to typing. I just remember thinking is EVERYONE really buying this?

Snowy-Owl has been around tumblr for a while. She first came to a lot Natives’ attention when she was called out for posting things that were appropriative in the tags. At that point she identified as a white Wiccan. She deleted and then came back again, but as an Iroquois and Seneca person. Then she deleted again and came back as the current iteration of Snowy-Owl-Whitecotton (I think Cherokee and Choctaw this time).
