i think of all the important discussions that tumblr has taken and boiled down to the most ridiculous extremes without considering it or understanding it is the one on cultural appropriation that grates on me most
like i'm intensely interested in that discussion and how far it goes and i think people do need to be aware of it, especially with appropriation of religious and political symbolism or treating living cultures as if they're a fairytale
but tumblr is so awful at identifying the differences between appropriation and evolution due to assimilation between cultures
a while ago i saw a post that was like "[kawaii face] reminder that using words like "swag" and "hood" is appropriation of black culture and very naughty!!! [frowny kawaii face] thank!! [kawaii face]" and like
yeah i think if you use black urban vernacular as a joke because it's funny to you that poor black people use different words then you are scum
but using that kind of blanket prohibition is an a+ way to ensure that "standard" english remains the english of the elite white population and language from other codes remains Othered and "unsuitable" so like yeah good job
tumblr's attitude to cultural appropriation is such that you shouldn't be allowed to use 0 without a certificate of your Arabic heritage
