"21 things to stock now" reality
I saw a post somewhere that had a list of "21 things to stock now". I remember that when I took the pill and woke up- I went back to what was comfortable at first- being a consumer. So, I stocked items I thought I would need. But as you mature in your preps you start to understand something... that is you can NEVER stock ALL you will really need. I am not saying not to stock those items that you will need and will become hard to get. On the contrary. However, on this post- "21 items" At the top of the list was WATER. Let me tell you right now, you cant stock enough water and you should not attempt to. Whoa! What? Your crazy you say. PLEASE HEAR ME OUT: I did not say "DONT STOCK WATER". Having a tank- or few barrels- lets just use a nice round number like 100 gallons for this conversation- will be a good amount to get you through a week or two of water outage. Why not more? If you have space and can do it- fine stock more! But most people don't and cant do that. NOW think about it for a moment. Water is heavy- just over 8 pounds per gallon. It is bulky as well. A 100 gallon tank takes up a lot if space and if you are in an apartment, that is going to be harder. They do have large bags that you can put into your bath tub and that makes sense as long as you can fill it before the water stops flowing. But even then- you will run out. 100 gallons is more than 800 pounds so you wont be moving it. Most resources tell us that you need one gallon per person per day. If you ONLY drink it, that's enough for most situations, but if you find the tap dry all of a sudden, at some point you need to wash and clean and use water for other things as well as drinking.
I say that you should instead have ways to make water safe for drinking. Ways to treat any water you can find- where ever you are- is MORE important than stocking it. This is like the old saying- give a man a fish- feed him for a day- teach a man to fish, feed him forever.
I think I will show you how make a large volume drinking water system. How to make over 20,000 gallons of VERY safe drinking water AND one person can carry what you need to do so very easily. Also, I will show you how to do it for around $50.00- that's right for around $50.00 you can make 20,000 gallons of drinking water and one person can carry the items Now isn't that a better way? So- stand by and I will get the info together and take some photos this weekend. In the mean time, especially if you are new and have started prepping- take some time to think about things from a long term perspective when you see lists like "21 things to stock now". I am not lambasting so called "survival experts" but I am asking you to think long term, sustainable, renewable and not just "stockpiles". You will find it more fun, more rewarding and less expensive!!
When I return, I will show you how to make 10 gallons per day with very little effort, without using fuel, and for little money. That is enough for a family of 4 each day to have over two gallons each, which is a very comfortable amount. Think about it- 20,000 gallons will take car of a family of four for 2000 days!
