Dear Alberta
Right, so when the price of oil is high enough and the royalties seized by the provincial gov't (a chunk of which is in-turn seized by the federal gov't) seems to cover their extraneous spending - nobody has anything to complain about. Then all of a sudden a foreign cartel consisting mostly of dictators and theocrats decides flood the market, tanking the price. In response to this, the collective Albertan reaction is to magically transform into armchair econ majors and demand that we "up our take" to compensate for a fiscal issue that the oogey-boogey oil companies didn't even create.
Now, I get it, the oil companies have infinite money right? They're corporations so there's no need to read up on this shit, they're auto-rich and auto-evil, we all know that. They (probably) eat babies, we've (practially) seen it with our own eyes! SO. Here's the plan: we just loot their revenue to make up for the money they stopped giving us because they... uh... no longer make enough.
And... then everything should go back to normal? That about right? No job loss or anything. No projects cancelled. Nothing like that. Because I mean, even though it obviously couldn't happen because reasons, it sure would be a pain if we upped our take to cover our bills, only to find a year from now that the new take has shrunken even more for SOME INCOMPREHENSIBLE REASON, requiring us to increase it again... but surely that wouldn't happen! Right? I mean I for one have never read a single fucking word regarding economics, so like the rest of us, I really can't imagine what could go wrong. But I have seen the Suncor guy's house in McMurray. Haven't you? I mean. Wow. Somebody get that guy. Don’t worry by the way, I hate his guts for a plethora of moral reasons deeply rooted in my conscience, and not because I’m part of a worldwide memetic trend of mind-bendingly hypocritical prejudice towards anyone better off than I am.Â
Honestly I don't know why so many Albertans are still showing such restraint. Surely you Vulcan paragons of logic must know that we'd have impeccable roads, free healthcare including dental AND birth control as well as a million other little benefits if we'd just seize 100% of oilfield revenue. You think I'm joking? I'm just rolling with the rest of the group! After all, we've already determined that it's 100% above board to soak private industry when (through no fault of their own) the pie has shrunk to the point where our extorted piece of it no longer pays the bills. So why play these games? Let's go full Venezuela and NO don't read anything about that country or PDVSA, just trust me they're doing great, it's really sunny there and everything, you can grow your own bananas, seriously it's fucking paradise.
Anyway what Prentice said was dickish, but even though I love you all so much that I just wanna pinch your little cheeks, you beautiful savages are turning his words into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
