Prempro Breast Cancer Survivor Wins $4 Million Compensation
Wyeth Inc. suffered a setback as a U.S. jury has awarded $4 million to the breast cancer survivor, who had claimed to have developed the disease after taking the hormonal therapy medication Prempro, manufactured by Wyeth, which is now part of the Pfizer group.Â
Blaming Wyeth, the jury found that the plaintiff’s invasive breast cancer had developed due to the hormone-replacement drug Prempro. Announcing the verdict that Prempro was an “unreasonably dangerous product,” the jury found Wyeth’s conduct reckless and granted punitive damages to the plaintiff.Â
The jury found that the Prempro manufacturer failed to properly warn users of the risks of using the drug. Criticizing Wyeth for misrepresenting what it did know, the jury pronounced the verdict in the product liability lawsuit in favour of the plaintiff.
The hormone therapy medication Prempro contains a blend of progesterone and estrogen and is prescribed for the treatment of menopause, including mood swings and hot flashes. The drug became extremely popular when it was marketed for sale.Â
In 2002, a study conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health startled everyone by revealing the drug’s link to cancer. By then, over 6 million women had taken Prempro, unaware of its side effects.
