Next Evolution in IoT Will Be Sentient Tools and Cognition or Predictive Computing

Growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) market, as evinced by increasing launches, investments and partnerships, will accelerate in 2017 with the commercialisation of narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). This cellular communications technology uses licensed spectrum and offers a standardised low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) that can capture previously untapped segments of the market. Further, machine learning and blockchain technologies are being integrated with different industries, such as financial services and energy. In Europe, IoT connections are set to exceed 9 billion by 2021. Dedicated venture funds for IoT development will help create an ecosystem that is conducive to the growth of startups in the region.

Machine Learning algorithms take the billions of Data points as inputs and extract actionable insights from ther data. So, the Predictive Organization starts with the prediction process and then creates a feedback loop through measuring and managing. Crucially, this tales place across the boundary of the Enterprise

How Computer Modeling Lets Doctors Predict Heart Attacks Before They Happen | Popular Science

Called multiscale hemodynamics, the technology not only lets doctors see exactly how blood is moving through a particular patient’s heart, but also predicts where future arterial blockages are likely to form, tipping the scales back in doctors’ favor. In essence, it predicts heart attacks before they happen. And it does all of this using nothing more than a simple CT scan.

“In five to ten years this technology is going to be so good and so well-oiled that you are going to be able to push a single button on the CT scanner and get all of this information in a few hours,” Rybicki says. “Or maybe in a few minutes. All of the pieces are there.”

There are some simple rules of thumb in predicting future health: If someone eats poorly, they're more likely to end up with diabetes. If they smoke regularly, heart disease or lung cancer might be in the cards. A startup called 100Plus is taking health predictions a step further by using millions of electronic medical records and health data sets to create a health timeline of your life based on current habits.

This is an example of when the megatrends of predictive computing is crossing the megatrends of consumerization, individualism and health. It will be interesting to see to what extent this will have an impact on people's behavior.

The notorious gangsters of Los Angeles are the latest target in an attempt to use computer algorithms to speed up crime investigations. [...] To help narrow down the search, Bertozzi's team represented the known gang rivalries of Hollenbeck as a web-like network with lines connecting rivals. Then the team looked at criminal activity across the network, some of which follows a predictable pattern in time, much like aftershocks from an earthquake. [...] This worked pretty well. The program produced three most likely gangs for each "unsolved crime", and these three included the correct gang 80 per cent of the time.

A new system in San Francisco learns from the past to predict traffic jams before they happen [...] The Smarter Traveler Research Initiative blends real-time traffic data with past traffic patterns to predict congestion up to 40 minutes into the future. Drivers are then automatically sent an email or text message of conditions on their regular commute before their trip begins.
