Steve looks up from his reading—or rather, the book he wastrying to read. Reading is hard when—

“The number of days I trained under him. Fodder for mynightmares. He was always so…blank. Like a puppet.”

Steve closed his book and moved to the edge of his bed. “Hedeserved better.”

“I never met her. They never…let me meet her.”

Steve hangs his head, chest aching. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I like her better now.”

He finds him in the labs, walls blacked out. He’d think Tonywas in there except Tony is out having lunch with Pepper.

He moves loudly, making sure his footsteps clack against thefloor, swinging the door shut hard enough to make a bang.

Bucky doesn’t move. He’s still, perched on Tony’s desk, hiseyes frozen on the holograms in front of him. Undeniable proof that he has adaughter.

Steve regards him for a moment, waits for acknowledgement.It never comes.

He moves quietly as he leaves. After all, how could he competeagainst blood?

He digs through the carton, trying to find the little peanutbutter-chocolate cluster as the TV runs in front of them.

“I think you already ate all of them,” Nat says, her voice content,her head snuggled up to his shoulder.

“Shut up.”

She snorts.

On the TV, Leslie Knope says goodbye to her best friend, AnnPerkins. It’s as emotional as it was the first three times in spite of his eideticmemory.

“She’s not a child anymore,” Nat whispers as Ben holds acrying Leslie.

“Then be her friend. Her mentor.” The credits roll and Stevethrows an arm around Nat. “It doesn’t matter who you are to her as long as you’rethere for her. You can figure out the rest along the way.”

“Ugh.”

“He likes cotton candy.”

Steve grins. “He has a sweet tooth.”

“You should take him back to Coney Island when you startdating.” Her eyes are almost innocent. Nat taught her well.

With no memory of what his mission was or where he was supposed to go after it was complete, Soldat finds a boy and decides that protecting the child must be the reason he's there.
