Hey! I'm sure an advisor will be able to answer this question, but I'm a little impatient: I was wondering if first years can take random classes in poli sci/public policy/whatever major without first taking whatever intro sequences are necessary??
It comes down to the individual professor and the class. Some will let you take the class, some won’t. Some classes are impossible to get into without pre-reqs even if the professor is usually more willing to let people in.

Hi Blurty girl! My degree requires me to take one math course and I have a choice between Calculus I and II, or JMB170Y1 - this is Biology, Math, and Mathematics. I never took high school calculus, and the JMB course is supposed to be pretty difficult. What do you think? Do you know somebody who has experience with this? I took Grade 12 Advanced Functions ... but I definitely didn't enjoy it :/. Either way I'm just going to have to grin and bear it.
Hey duckster! I took none of these courses because I avoided math like the plague in my undergraduate career (I'm not terrible at it, I just, really, well, there are enough mathy people in my life that I can leech off of them [please don't hate me for such a terrible excuse] :P)
So while I may not be able to provide you relevant information on those courses, there is something that can. I'm not sure if you're aware of the Anti-Calendar, but this is basically how I chose many of my courses this year lol. All you do is click on the department under which you can find your course, and search for your course code. The information they provide I found helpful, and I try to pick the course usually which has the highest re-take percentage. Meaning, if the students had the option to take the course again without any requirements held over their heads, would they still do it? The higher the number, the better. Naturally, I've opened this question up to my other readers in case they have personal experience they can lend to you about any of these courses.
I took SL Math in grade 11 IB. I think it included Grade 12 U Calculus & Integrals and Grade 12 U Statistics & Probability. I think the last time I took advanced functions was in grade 11, but calculus basically included that. Or maybe I have the course titles mixed up :PÂ
All the people I know who took a first year math class were all big fans of math, so I can only provide you their accounts of it, which were for the large part positive. (I have a mathematics specialist friend, an economics and IR double major friend, and a life sci + IR double major friend).Â
But remember, even if there are things that put you off from taking the course, doesn't mean you shouldn't. There are always TAs, office hours for your Prof, study groups, academic dons, and many other sources of help you can use and abuse throughout your academic career. Positive thinking is half the journey, the effort is the rest. I know you can do it, ducky! :)
With love and hope,
Blurty Girl
