Having a go at trying to write my own fanfiction for the first time, and one (small compared to other writing struggles I'm having) struggle I'm finding is figuring out how to get Cass and Jason's dynamic to work, especially since my fic is based off of the characters pre-New52, and as far as I remember the two never actually interacted. Like the gal who despises killing and killers, and the guy who thinks killing is the only way change will truly happen and people will be safe. How tf am I supposed to write them in the same room together NOT beating on each other??? I'm reading other fanfics where the Batfamily are close and relatively happy to try and figure out how to pull it off, but all the fics either have Cass just not really care that Jason kills people, or have it that Jason has changed his morals and ignored what he believed in by changing to rubber bullets so that he's allowed a space in the family. And I don't really want to do either of those because they feel like kind of a betrayal of the characters...
But then at the same time, so many Jason Todd fans say that Jason being a murderer after his resurrection is super OOC of the writers to do in the first place, and they probably only did it because he was poor and they were classist. But then if that's OOC what IS in character? And how would his in character behaviours affect his entire post-resurrection stories and dynamics? Am i going to have to change his whole backstory? He's just a fucking side character in this fic I don't want to have to go in depth on why he's acting the way he does, and the ways in which his backstory and therefore his character is different! Or maybe I should??? But even then I still don't know how to fucking characterize this walking mess of a character!
They're both side characters in the fic, so atp I'm just going to have them both have moments where they interact with their family, with Jason's relationship with them being strained, and never have those interaction overlap so I don't have to deal with figuring this shit out, because I don't know how I can write Actually Get Along With Eachother Relatively Well Batfam without compromising a character or two (or at least that character's pre-New52 version)
