I took some bittersweetness from @phoenixyfriend on the GG discord and turned it into a small bit of sad.
"High-ness-n-ness. S-s-s-sleep."
Tarvek blinked and looked up from his notes, rubbing the spot on his chin where his cufflink had been making an indentation. "I'm sorry, Tinka. What was that?"
She tsked disapprovingly, or perhaps it was an unintentional noise or small short circuit, and lurched to her feet. Tarvek quickly dropped his pen and rushed to keep her from pitching forward. "Whoa. Careful. Don't move around too much."
"D-d-don't mo-move. M-m-m-me." Her face was still frozen and expressionless, but surely he couldn't be imagining the wistful sorrow behind her words.
And again, his heart broke. He gently squeezed her shoulders. "Tinka. I will repair you. I'll fix what my father's done. I promise. You've done so much-- I didn't look out for you like I should have, but I'll make this right if it takes all my life."
Tinka pressed a finger against his lips, narrowly avoiding cuffing him on the ear in doing so. "High-highness. Y-y-you are l-learn-learning. H-helping. D-doing w-w-w-well. I thank- I thank- I thank y-y-you. You ne-need r-re-rest th-though."
"I--" Tarvek turned away to hide his bewildered blush.
She trusted him. After all that had been done to her- after all that sparks had done to her sisters, she radiated a quiet trust that thrilled as much as it unsettled him. Going back to his desk he felt a snag and a tug on his wrist. After a weak but determined yank he allowed Tinka to pull him back to her and take him into her arms. He hesitated, he really should be getting back to work, and then leaned his warm cheek into the cool metal of her shoulder. There was no movement from the inhale and exhale of breath, but in the gentle buzz and whirr of her inner mechanisms he could almost hear the faint wheeze of a lung. A soft rattle, like Anevka-- No. No, that line of thought would do no one any good. He was frustrated to feel hot, damp tears on his cheeks.
