How to Quickly Set Up an Affordable Recording Studio
A few years ago a person who wanted to record a CD would either pay enormous fees for studio time or need to be picked up by a record label. Nowadays when you are ready to record you simply set up your recording space with the equipment you need and start laying down the tracks for those killer sounds you hear inside your head. It’s that simple; but, before you start recording there are few things you’ll need for your studio.
#1. A computer and software program.
Almost everyone has a computer these days, but not just any computer will do. You need one that is optimized for music with a lot of storage, memory and the power to run your music programs. As for software, there are several options available and only you can decide which is best for your needs. Just remember your software and your computer is the brain power of your recording studio. Definitely get the best equipment and software program you can afford.

#2. Sound Proofing
Sound proofing is a vital requirement in your recording studio as without it your instruments and voices will bounce off the walls, creating an echo when you record. A good medium for this is recording foam.. as it deadens the sound and allows you to record without the echo effect. Anything that absorbs sound will work; I’ve known some would-be-stars to use egg cartons!
#3. Soundcard
An audio soundcard with adequate inputs and outputs to allow you to record all of the instruments at once. Without an audio soundcard there is no way for the sound to get from your instrument into the computer!

#4. Audio Interface
Audio Interface works as a pre-amp giving your instruments that extra boost of good sound that you don’t get if you simply plug your instruments straight into the computer. By pre-amping your guitars and basses, you will keep their best sound before they go into the mixing board.

#5. Monitors
Monitors are special speakers you’ll need to make sure that you have everything right. With monitors you will be able to hear the highs and lows of your recording so that you can make sure that it all blends together correctly. Recording head phones can work in this capacity as well if noise becomes an issue in your basement at around midnight. Remember, it’s all in the mix.

#6. Microphones
Recording Microphone Equipment is a must-have. Recording mics are not the same as a regular microphone. These are designed especially to capture all of the sounds from the voice on every side. Attached to the recording microphone should be a pop filter, which will stop the hard consonants and hissing from dirtying up the recording with muffled sounds.

#7. Audio Compressor
Consider getting a compressor. While this is an optional piece of equipment, don’t overlook it. Specifically used for vocals, the compressor prohibits the waves in the voice from reaching certain peaks, putting you in the red zone. It equalizes the waves so that you can adjust the voice to match the other instrumentation as you go.

Setting up your own recording studio can be an exciting challenge. These are the necessary basics …you will need.. to get you started recording your own music… in your own home studio. You can always add more equipment later – or take away unneeded equipment. The mentioned list will give you a good start to a complete your home recording studio. Have fun!

Building a contact mic with preamp
As shown in the tech class by Michael and Jon. This was a very filly circuit and unfortunately, as was the same for Michael’s first attempt, didn’t work. If it is absolutely necessary for my project I will build another, but for now I’ll move on and test with regular contact mics.
Graphic User Interface for Pre Amp.
Whats On Your Pre-amp?
What are all these knobs and buttons on my pre am? You ever wonder this? Its ok because this really is a new learning curve getting into this world of audio. Ill be discussing what is usually on every or most pre-amps out today. Im going to go off my apollo because it has most of what's out today on every pre-amp.
1.monitor and preamp, monitor is what is coming out of your headphones and or monitors. You'll notice when your headphone are plugged in sound will come out. Once that happens you can turn down your monitors usually with the big knob so u get a silent clean recording. And the pre-amp is what the mics are plugged into. If you didn't know what the difference was or were confused here ya go lol.
2. Going to the pre-amp stuff, you might see some options or buttons. you might see the: -Input - the signal coming from the microphone. you can adjust the gain here remember to always aim for the loudest part of the vocal at -6db to get a great recording.
-a weird half triangle looking thing - this is a symbol for low pass filter. What that does is automatically cuts off low end frequencies.(see your pre amps specs to see what freq. it cuts off to.) it makes your voice cleaner sounding but you may not need it depends on how the engineer does it. - +48V - This Is a very important one. This means 48 volts of electricity which is what CONDENSER microphones use and need to work properly. Please check to see if your microphone is a condenser or dynamic. If it's dynamic you do not need to have this on. If it's condenser it must be on right when your daw launches up and your session is ready. - Pad - This button means that it will dim your mic by -10 or -20 db usually(see specs of your pre amp) usually needed for really loud sounds. -A Zero with a slash through it - This Symbol is phase - it can flip the phase of your mic if needed usually not really needed but i think its mostly for more a few channels if your have that on your pre amp.
3. The Back Of The Pre-amp. On the Back Of the pre amp you might not understand some cool additions you can make with your dope pre amp. - optical in - If you have this on your preamp you have a really cool feature. You can go buy a optical cable(i recommend at sweetwater.com) and what it is , is 8 additional channels for your pre-amp. you could record a drum set with that if needed. -Monitor L R - All Pre-amps have this its where your monitors are plugged into(speakers). The L is the left speaker and the R is the right speaker. if you have more you can add more speakers or just go get a monitor A/B setup and you can put a few sets thru there. - Line Out - This is a cool one also. This is how.... say you were in a studio and wanted to use your pre-amp instead of your friends weird one. Well to get it to the mixing board. You would use the line out cables and put it a channel in the board and it would be a line level signal for direct recording. Meaning exactly whats coming out of yours will get recorded through the board. I Covered Most of whats on all pre-amps out today. Of Course there's other things but thats just some too easy stuff that most of yall im sure know already. Have Fun And Make some great music. Bless.
