Pretty sure people have forgotten that Watergate is a place. The “gate” wasn’t added on.

I don't know if the people using this even remember what that refers to? Maybe that Nixon is involved somehow, but beyond that? And at first people used the -gate suffix to imply a conspiracy, which makes a mild sort of sense, but now anything even mildly controversial gets a "-gate" and it pretty much guarantees that I will not take that thing seriously.
