Weird origins of K-pop
According to Michael Fuhrs: Globalization and Popular Music in South Korea one unique factor of korean pop is ppong (뽕), a term that derives from ppongtchak, which is a another word for the typical trot 2/4 rhytmic pattern and accented first and weak second beats. This music element is still used in kpop songs. In his text Fuhr quotes the producer Chŏng Chae-yun, who states, that this element is similar to 80s euro-electro-pop. He names the german duo MODERN TALKING as a popular group in korea due to these similarities and its member Dieter Bohlen the “king of ppong”.
