Planned Parenthood Staff Spotlight on Karen!
This January, our staff member Karen took on a new role as a Senior Sexuality Educator and Trainer focusing on Sexuality Education for Adults. This new program, which offers workshops in consent and communication, STIs, contraception, and sexual and reproductive wellness, is open to anyone 18 years old and upwards, and was conceived with adults and seniors in mind.
“There’s a myth that older people don’t need sex education,” Karen says. “But lots of adults have gaps in their knowledge.”
As part of her new role, Karen travels to Queens and Brooklyn facilitating workshops at community centers, shelters for individuals disconnected from housing, public libraries, assisted living communities, and support groups. At the end of every workshop, she makes sure that all participants know how and where to make an appointment at a health center like PPNYC.
“Many of the people I meet, for different reasons, have never been to a doctor, or are afraid to go,” Karen notes.
She even brings along teaching aids like speculums and birth control demonstrators to demystify components of sexual health care. Teaching adults sex ed has its own special challenges. “One of the hardest things is convincing adults that it’s okay to ask questions,” Karen says. She’s enthusiastic about her opportunity to develop the program:
“We are building new partnerships and just started offering workshops in February, so it’s been really exciting to see this new program come to life.”
At 17, I became pregnant. I decided to terminate the pregnancy because it was the best option for me at the time. It's important that abortion remain safe and legal for women.
