What is PPGI?

PPGI stands for Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron and is also known as pre-coated steel. The coating weight is generally around 270 gms (zinc) and the final product can be used in a variety of use-cases. The surface of the galvanised steel has evenly distributed layers of zinc elements that play a critical role in protection for the base material. Corrosion is limited and there is better protection offered.

What is the difference between PPGI and PPGL Steel?

The main difference between PPGI and PPGL is the coating applied to each variation. PPGI is evenly covered with a layer of zinc. The coating provides the elemental anodic protection to the base material. This makes the life of the product longer, while providing more protection. PPGL is coated with a mix of Al, Zn, and other trace elements. The coating is around 55% AL and offers a smoother finish to the final product.

Corrosion in PPGL steel can spread, requiring increased maintenance after application. Greater care is required in the case of PPGL. A PPGI sheet will have corrosion localized and not spread across various parts of the sheet. When opting for the right PPGI product, ensure that you’re going for a quality manufacturer like JSW steel. Quality brands will have a more technical approach to enhancing longevity and minimizing corrosion.

PPGL steel is also more corrosion resistant than PPGI steel. However, the cut edges of the sheet are less protected. This adds a layer of context to the buying process, so that buyers have all the information before buying the right metal roofing sheets. The steel’s honeycomb structure may not enable the right protection to the edges.
