POD:TSS CHAPTER FOUR
<<< Previous | Next >>>
In the cocoon, there is silence.
There is peace.
Sheâs suspended in the air by delicate yet surprisingly strong threads as she grows her wings. Her body is curled up close, giving her wings enough chance to grow out properly.
Itâs warm in the cocoon.
Not too warm, though, like lying down in the Kingdom of Sand and putting on ten fluffy blankets. No, itâs just right, like drinking a nice, big cup of hot chocolate on a cold winterâs day.
She feels no pain, even as her body develops the right hormones and parts to produce the silk sheâs meant to make.
In the cocoon, there is silence...
~~~
After her five days were up, the golden threads of her cocoon crumbled away to reveal the smiling faces of Prism, Violet, Proxima, Swallowtail, Exquisite, Apricot, and Frostbite. Majestic snapped free of the threads and stepped down onto wobbly legs, and spread her wings.
The first pair was angular and partially translucent, with pale pink membranes and dark pink frames. The second pair was more SilkWing-ish, again with a pink-on-pink color scheme as well.
Exquisite didnât seem very pleased that her genes were less dominant than Swallowtailâs; it was the complete opposite for the hybrid, who carefully disentangled the many sloths wrapped around her neck (putting them on her mate) and hugged Majestic.
âOh, my little honeybee, finally spreading her wings!â Swallowtail cooed; the SilkWing tribrid delicately pried off her motherâs talons. âHappy sixth hatching day, honeybee.â
âThanks, Mother.â Majestic nuzzled her and then turned to the others. âDid you all really wait here for me?â
âOf course!â Prism smiled.
âMy friend the flamesilk. How rare!â Proxima thumped her on the back with their tail. âDo you feel special?â
âI mean...I always have.â Majestic glanced down at her glowing wrists, purposefully changing the scales above to see which colors made the glow more prominent.
âNow why donât we go home? Iâve got a surprise for you.â Swallowtail smiled and led her away...
Flying was hard.
Theyâd been practicing for the last few hours, flying in circles around the dragonet wingery. It was a bit humiliating, knowing she was a year away from being an adult but still seeming like a pretty decoration (for a day or two) that the year-old dragonets could gawk at.
She landed on the ground and Exquisite nodded, satisfied. âThe flight back to Renewalâll take a long time and itâll hurt a lot.â The former RainWing Queen said, fondly rubbing the top of her slothâs head.
âI...â Majestic hesitated, biting her lip until it bled red. âI-Iâll miss you, Mother.â She went in for a hug and took comfort in the scent of wet fur and flowers.
âYeah. I...Iâll miss you too, honeybee.â Something in her motherâs tone seemed a little sad, as if she knew something Majestic didnât.
When they arrived back in Renewal, she was reallywishing she was an animus so Majestic could ENCHANT HERSELF TO FEEL NO PAIN BECAUSE IT SUCKED. SO THERE.
At their hut, Majestic was greeted with a pair of amber teardrops. They had golden framework, looking like the wing of an insect.
âTheyâre a family heirloom,â Swallowtail explained. âAnd now Iâm entrusting it to you. Take good care of them.â
âOf course, Mother.â Majestic took the earrings from the hybrid and stabbed it through her earlobe. âHow does it look?â She asked nervously, spots of pinkish-gray dusting her snout and neck.Â
âI think it looks great, honeybee. Now whaddaya say we go out and get some food, eh?â
It was sunset now, and Majestic and Swallowtail were just on their way home when something peculiar happened. Venus emerged from her house, pinkish-red eyes flicking over to stare at them. A green fine with barely-there red veins wound itself around her neck.
âWell, whatâs this?â She hissed. âTwo dragons, visiting lil olâ me?âÂ
âWe mean you no harm, Venus. Leave us in peace and we wonât bother you.â Swallowtail narrowed her eyes, stepping in front of Majestic protectively.
Venus suddenly lunged forward, talons flashing in the dying sunlight. She and Swallowtail wrestled for a bit and the tribrid was too late to step in as claw marks sliced themselves across her motherâs neck.
A shriek tore from her throat as she raced to catch Swallowtailâs body.
âOh, nothing personal, Majestic. Just business.â Venus chuckled heartily as she licked the blood off her talons.
Yes, I killed off Swallowtail.
Do I feel sorry about that?
...no >:3
The wooden platform that carried her weight thudded on the ground and Majestic sighed contently. As she stretched her legs, the tribrid gasped with pain; her developing silk glands and wings ached. Now her Metamorphosis (and her sixth hatching day!) was only a few days away. She rubbed her wrist and bounded over to join her friends.
The rainforest was huge and alarmingly bright; everywhere she put her rhondonite talons down, the mud suckled on it until she pulled them away with a disgusted look. The rain smelled of newly-wet mud and forest and the SilkWing dragonet crinkled her nose and attempted to block out the scent of the forest.
Majesticâs emerald eyes landed on a hybrid not too far away from her; their gazes met.
This dragon, she knew, was her cousin Frostbite. The dragon was an IceWing-RainWing hybrid, related only to her in the sense that Apricot (her cousinâs mother) and Exquisite were siblings. Frostbite had pale blue scales with a periwinkle underbelly and patterns on their body; their wings had a green tint that reminded Majestic of the lights sheâd seen on her trip to Pantala when she was four.
The RainWings that were lingering around her cousin said something that made them laugh; Frostbite broke their gaze and laughed, seeming to forget that Majestic was even there.
The noise in the rainforest quieted down at nightfall, when it began raining softly. Majestic laid in the hammock sewn out of leaves and silk that her mothers had fashioned for her, wide awake and practically so alert she could hear every raindrop thud on the rooftop.
She heard distant chatter and got up, instantly camouflaging herself as to not get caught. She slinked outside slowly and carefully, keeping her talonsteps light; she desperately hoped whoever it was didnât look too closely at the one spot rain bounced off of.
It was only some silly dragonets, no older than two or three, trying to catch raindrops in their mouths. She watched the four dragonets get shooed away by a disgruntled NightWing and went back inside the hut.
When her wrists began burning, Majestic was taken immediately to the section of the Winfrey reserved for the SilkWings growing their wings.
Gold silk spun out of her wrists; Majestic tried memorizing the faces of her family and friends as she disappeared.
Short one, I know.
But worth it! Right?
Timeskip to next year, if that helps.
Majestic paced around, careful not to let her lashing tail hit Violetâs or Prismâs cocoons. Proxima was sitting in the corner, gray eyes following the SilkWing tribridâs every move.
How long does a Metamorphosis usually last?
Pretty sure itâs been five days; shouldnât they be out right now?
She heard crackling and perked up, staring hopefully at the her friendsâ cocoons. But, nope, it was someone else, being greeted by their friends and siblings. Majestic sighed and laid down, resting her head on her talons as her tail tapped a beat on the floor of the cave.
Proxima laughed. âMan, your thoughts are super mopey right now.âÂ
âOh, shut up, you.â The SilkWing tribrid grabbed a mini pebble off of the cave floor and threw it at her friend; Proxima laughed and ducked, throwing up their wings to protect them.
Majestic rolled her eyes and glanced over at the other cocoons; if she strained, she could see the silhouettes of her friends growing their wings through the silk. She noticed Prismâs cocoon crinkle and stared over at Proxima; the two  races over and watched their friend claw her way out of it. Violet soon followed and the two dragons gave the SilkWings space to stretch their wings.
Prismâs wings were pink with white and red splashes; gold lined the outside and mixed with the others. âI am so getting these pierced later.â They grinned, folding the wings up to her side.
Violetâs wings were a deep purple with hints of silver and green that made heart-like patterns on her wings. Your wings look cool, Pri. She signed. Letâs go flying later?
âOf course, sis,â Prism nudged her side and Violet snickered.
âWell what are we waiting for?â Proxima asked impatiently. âLetâs go to town!â
Renewal saw four very excited dragonets that day.
The four stopped by the Pyrrhian branch of Droplets for some more sweet treats from the old HiveWing who worked there, Treehopper, and his wife Tau.
On their way, Majestic breezed past Venus, who greeted her with unreadable pinkish-red eyes.
The quartet took their honey drops to a showing of Darkstalker and Clearsight, a tragedy (that was a true story!) from Pyrrhiaâs past and the HiveWingâs distant ancestors. By the end, where Darkstalker was buried under rubble and Clearsight fled to Pantala, Prism and Proximaâd already lost interest while Majestic and Violet were practically bawling together.
Now, they lingered at the edge of the ravine; the winged SilkWings and NightWing that were Majesticâs friends were excitedly eyeing the large flying space between the various huts, caves, and hammocks.
âI donât think this is going to go well,â Majestic said anxiously, taking a step away from the ledge.
âAw, donât worry, Maj.â Prism batted away her worries. âHow hard can flying be?â
Weâll be hanging onto you; even if we fall, the catch-webâll keep us safe. Violet promised, the teardrop earring jingling against her neck. Besides, Proximaâs carrying you and theyâve been more experienced in flying.
The NightWing looked like they wanted to protest but was quickly shut up by Prism. Regardless, they offered one of their talons and Majestic hesitantly took it.
âAaaand three...two...one...go!â
The quartet took a running leap  off the ledge.
Proxima effortlessly glided across the top of the chasm. Majestic noticed Prism and Violet soon joined them in the air.Â
Childlike excitement and wonder seizes her heart as gold covered all of her body.
Flying is...amazing! I never want to leave this moment...
Proxima angled their wings and landed on Majesticâs porch, slicing the silk harness and letting her go. ââBye! I sure hope there arenât any exploding  beetles in your bed, Maj.â The dragonets waved to each other and went their separate way.
Majestic pushed aside the bead curtains and saw Swallowtail hunched over her desk, furiously scribbling down on something. Her mother had been given the important task of transcribing old and new scroll alike for the Messengers, librarians who flew from place-to-place handing out free scrolls.Â
âMother,â Majestic spoke finally. Swallowtail looked up and smiled softly at her daughter. âwhat are you doing?â
Swallowtail delicately put away the scrolls and turned to face her daughter. âJust working on the scrolls Queen Glory requested. Did you have fun with your friends?â
âYeah!â Majestic hopped onto her silk hammock, adjusting her position before continuing to speak. âI went FLYING today! Well, almost-flying. But it was the closest I could get to flying for another couple days.â She worried the weak, stringy thread that held the hammock together.
âAh. Speaking of, how would you like to visit the rainforest for your sixth hatching day? Go into Metamorphosis and come out with both your moms there to greet you?â Swallowtail offered, a tired smile gracing her gold-and-black features.Â
âWait, REALLY?â
Swallowtail nodded, and Majestic raced off to go pack.
