Nia Power-tip of the week: memorable assignments of keyboard shortcuts
It's time for the 0th installment of my infinite part series: Nia's power tips & tricks. Do you use any automation software like Quickeys or Keyboard Maestro to reduce tedious tasks down to a quick keyboard shortcuts? It can be tricky figuring out keys to assign these shortcuts for two reasons: You need memorable keyboard commands. You need to have keyboard "chord" combinations that don't conflict with Apple and 3rd party software makers own keyboard modifiers. The following are commonly in use already and probably shouldn't be used:
Note: "<X>" means any random unique assigned to a specific function.
Command-<X>
Option-<X>
Command-Opt-<X> (terminal + others)
Command-Shift-<X>
Command-Ctrl-<X> (iTerm)
That only leaves two sets of keys that aren’t used by anyone:
Ctrl-Opt
Ctrl-Option-Shift.
I use Ctrl-Option-<X> for all text auto-complete.
For example, Ctrl-OptZ is acappelli, Ctrl-OptC is cappelli, etc.
For all other macros/scripts, I use Ctrl-OptShift. This includes Menu Selections quickeys, Automatic phone dialers, Database openers, etc.
Thoughts?
